Yesterday 3/20/12 was my daughters first soccer game of the season. It was a home game and they played on the new turf at Veterans Memorial fields here in town. It was the first time the girls played on the new astro turf. My daughter was apprehensive about playing on this new field but has decided that it was all right after all. The girls played a great game and won 4-0 in their season opener. My daughter had a good game although she didn't have much to do as the rest of the team kept the ball away from the goal most of the game. She did have a couple really good drop kicks during this game. The one drop kick she kicked at the 8 yard line and when the ball hit the turf it was on the other end of the 50 yard line and landed on about the 38 or 39 yard line for the opposing team for about a 53 yard kick.
Today I stopped by the motel for my paycheck and the evening clerk told me that there was a really nice article in the paper about yesterdays game and asked if I wanted it. I said of course so she went and got the sports section and gave it to me. There were 3 articles in the paper about Lutheran High soccer. One about the boys game which they won also, one about the senior girls and 10 returning letter winners and the third article was about the girls game and their win.
The following is a small portion from the article about the girls win and my daughter the keeper for the team:
While the Lutheran High offense controlled the ball through most of the game, Eagle keeper Bethannie Buckels made sure the Knights didn’t cash in on their chances. Buckels pitched a shutout, recording six keeper saves — none more thrilling than her save with just under eight minutes left.
After the ball bounced around in front of the net, Buckels managed to punch it away. But it found the leg of a Knight attacker, who pushed it right back at Buckels. The sophomore managed to nab it out of the air to secure the shutout.
“Our defense was doing a great job because they didn’t have to do too much, but our offense was also doing a great job of playing defense right away. If they lost the ball, they would fight to win it back right away,” Jabs said. “Bethannie is a very good goalie. She stopped a couple goals . . . and I credit my defense a lot. They challenge the ball.”

Needless to say I am a very proud mom right now as she did a great job last night at the game even though she doesn't think she did anything. I was also informed by one of the other mom's (and a high school classmate of mine) that the Wayne State Nebraska soccer coach was sitting in the stands watching the game. I told Bethannie about this and she said that the coach was probably watching the Juniors and Senior players. I said no matter who she was there to watch I will bet you that after watching Bethannie drop kick the ball 53 yards she made a note to be watching this player for the next couple years.
The next game is on Tuesday in Grand Island. I am planning on taking the day off work that day and taking my mom to court for the ticket she got after her car accident then when finished with that head to my best friends house to pick her up and take her on to the game with me. While there I will be meeting up with another friend that had kids in gymnastics with my oldest daughter and that used to work at the motel with me until she got married an ended up moving to Grand Island. I think the afternoon and evening will be a lot of fun and I will enjoy having a day off since I am currently back on the schedule at the motel because the person they hired to replace me hasn't worked out. I worked last weekend and am on the schedule for the next 2 weekends to fill in and train the new person that they have hired to take over the position.
Well take care everyone and have a great weekend.
