The Girl Who Never Learned To Swim...:(

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Yup I'm the girl who never learned to swim, I want to swim so bad...When you walk into my gym the pool is the first thing you see and I always see people swimming so gracefully:( Makes me sad that I never learned...is it too late to learn?? I know swimming is a great way to burn calories which makes me want it even more LOL. One thing I know I can do is get my son into swimming lessons asap that way he will learn young. emoticon

I wish you lived in Lowell, MA. There is a women there who teaches beginners swimming at the Y. She is amazing. She can get petrified toddlers to jump in the deep end. She can get adults to relax and trust that she won't let them sink the first time they try to float. She can get people to put their faces in the water. She is amazing. You should learn to swim. It's great exercise and it will be such a boost to your confidence.

I was 25 and 260+ lbs when I took my first swim lesson.
I was at ease in water, but didn't know any swim technique and here I am now, 5 years later and I swim everyday!
A lot of public pools offer master swimming classes for every level. It's worth it, take my word for it!

Don't be self conscious - there are people older than all of us that never learned to read but are doing it now. There will be many other people in the same situation. I can almost guarantee you won't be the first adult to come in and take swimming lessons. Most places have different age categories. Oh, and think of all the grandparents taking college classes with 18 year olds. It's your life. You only live once. If you want to do it, don't let anything stop you!!! If nothing else, look stuff up online (you can find detailed information about ANYTHING online it seems) and go practice the steps at some public pool or something later this year when the place isn't very busy.

@ timeiichange, yikes that is scary! I don't think I ever had a scary expirence like that...or maybe I did and don't remember.

@fixed531, I actually thought about that but I think I would be too self conscious.

Hi there. I know the feeling. I'm 28 and I also don't know how to swim. I enjoy being in the water but I have a fear once my feet don't touch the ground. When I was about 6 I was taken by a wave and almost drown and since then I have to feel the ground with my feet which is why I haven't learned. I haven't tried either. I say go for it...give it a shot!
