More accomplishments for our retirement travels

Sunday, March 18, 2012

BIG BIG step - we booked our flight to New Zealand!!!!! We're using miles so we were limited to what was available - so we're flying from Seattle to Wellington, NZ, on October 29. And, due to crossing the International Dateline, we arrive midday on Hallowe'en! Woooohoooo! I'll probably book a hotel for us for a night or two, but that's 6 months away, so I'll hold off for a bit. I just like to know where I'll be sleeping when I arrive after a 36+ hr flight. (And there wasn't any availability in Business Class, so we'll be in coach. But I'm Gold status, so I'll get us the exit row and we'll have plenty of legroom.)

Another big accomplishment - we've had our bank accounts at a bank from Puerto Rico - we moved our banking to a Canadian bank, which has offices around the world - so we finally received bank statements, I'm ready to move my direct deposit to that bank, and so today I ordered checks for the new account. Not major, but it is - because this checkbook will stay with my brother, our power of attorney, and he'll pay any bills (such as a storage unit) and send us our medications yearly and stuff like that.

So, move big steps!!!

Exciting retirement plans, mine are more mundane. But physical, spiritual and mental health will come first. I'm hoping to be able to go to Belgium, Germany & Austria within the year.
Enjoy your great plans.

The plan is to spend 6 months to a year in NZ, then head to Australia - just taking public transportation (we love trains and ferries) and heading vaguely west and north. We plan to be nomads for about 10 years, until we're old and tired. Then we'll pick somewhere and settle down. The plan is to not have a plan. So it's a one-way ticket!

WOW! That sounds exciting! What I wouldn't give to be able to take an extended trip like that. Those are big steps!

Exciting! Are you moving there or just for an extended visit to New Zealand?
