Why It's So Different This Time Around

Saturday, March 17, 2012

I have been on SparkPeople now for 7 months and want to reflect on why it is different this time around. I have done different weight loss programs beginning in my 20s. I am now in my 60s and can't say that any of them were successful for the long haul. I am a good loser, or I was when I was younger. But what good is the losing if it comes right back (and it usually didn't take long)?

Here's what I think is making the difference. I feel much more accountable here--to myself and to others who I call my SparkFriends and teammates. The posting, blogging, tracking, and fitness challenges have made the difference. Going to a meeting and stepping on a scale didn't work for me the way SparkPeople is. I was always in a hurry to get the weight off--the result was the emphasis. Now the emphasis is on the process and doing it right. I am so much more conscious of the type and amount of food I'm eating. I'm not BIG on exercising, but I'm doing something almost every day. I'm glad It's not too late to teach this old dog a few new tricks!

Ditto to everything you said! All of that adds up to belief in oneself that it really is possible not only to lose but to keep those pounds off. We're gonna do it!

Amen! I agree with you 100%

I am so behind because of having the grandkids over Spring Break, but just plugging along, and I will eventually get caught up reading my friends' blogs. There is so much less stress with less "stuff" to do with my Sparking since I trimmed things down. I am not worrying about the points so much, and just tracking the necessary things and keeping up with blogs of my best SparkFriends. So much nicer! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

You're SO right. It's really kind of nice that when we get to this point in our lives (over 60) when we've seen for ourselves what the different results have been in the past, through personal experience, with other programs or paths to weight loss. The stats are impossibly negative - over 90% of all people (including moi) who lose weight gain it all back. Fat cells shrink - but never go away entirely once they're formed. They just sit there, waiting for us to fill them up again!!! I can definitely second your observation that here, on SP, it's the daily ACCOUNTABILITY, friendly (we're all in this together) support network and tracking that make this work like a charm. I wasn't BIG into exercise, but I sure am now!! I consciously THINK about anything that I eat now - it makes all the difference. Do I want to add that ______ to my food tracker?!?!?! NO! Forget about it!!! I'm thankful every day that I'm here and found SP. Glad you're here too!! Thanks for the great blog! emoticon emoticon

I agree totally. When I finally "relaxed" and let the process be my guide, the success just came.

Having such a positive attitude is working for you! You are so supportive of your friends and I feel you are a caring person and , to me, the people on this site are exactly the same way (super supportive). Keep doing the things you are doing and just be healthier. As you said, we aren't on a time limit. Melrie emoticon

Janet, I think the community support and the weight tracking is the key to this program. Tracking our food and fitness is so important.
You are on the right road.

It is never too late as long as you are willing and open to learn and change. I have discovered that this journey is long and has many hills along the way. I have also discovered as you that the friends I am making along the way make the whole trip more fun and the rewards sweeter. I wish you well as this journey for you continues. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
