Super Saturday - Question about Gastric Bypass Surgery

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Yesterday was a good day overall.
Morning was the usual - grocery shopping with my mother. She is such a picky eater and when you put that with all the things that she can't eat, she really has a restricted list of foods to pick from. I spent the last 20 minutes in the store sending my DH for the last few things we needed while making suggestions to my mother for things she might like. I did get her to try turkey burgers. I hope she likes them. She never said that any thing was "good" so I have low expectations. LOL!

Afterwards I came home and did the 10lb slimdown xtreme cardiokickboxing workout. It felt good and I really got my sweat on! My back, arms, and shoulders are sore today so it was a good workout. emoticon

Then I blew through the house straightening and dusting, etc. as my BIL and his family were coming over for dinner and to celebrate our birthdays (long past except for BIL's which is in another week).

I made a kids favorite spaghetti pie (spaghetti with cheese and pepperoni), salad, and a "clean" eggplant parm, which was yummy. After that came the Italian rum cake and ice cream. My favorite! We had a nice visit.

On a side note, this is the SIL that had the gastric bypass about 18 months ago. She is so thin it startled me. My other SIL has been telling me that she is too thin now and is really only skin and bones. I would guess that she is below 130 at 5' 7". We had not seen her for a couple of months. Last night she ate fine but my other SIL says that she does not always eat at home.

We are worried about her and don't know whether or how to approach the subject with my BIL. I know that his sister has said something to him about it so maybe we don't need to. Just worried about her. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it something that typically happens to people that have had gastric bypass and like the feeling of getting thinner and thinner?

No I hae never heard of that effect - most people I know who had the GPO lost a lot and then gained some of it back again. One who has not gained back says that she has started drinking too much now.

Now and then - when I fail again on eating right - I think about applying for a gpo. I would get one because o my BMI and as I live in Sweden, the welfare system would make it affordable. But reading about your SIL and knowing about the people I know stops me - I have an eating disorder and a gpo would just make the sympthoms disappear, not the disease.

And - as the gpo-patients starts to become old there is a serious problem with malnutrition among them because it is hard to get the right healthy nutrition when you have had a gpo. Maybe this is what happened to your SIL - it is so complicated to eat right that she skips it? If you all have spoken about the gpo you could also speak about how she is doing now, I think.

One of my co-workers had gastric bypass several years ago. He is now skin and bone. He looks like death warmed over. He doesn't absorb nutrients from food correctly if you know what I mean. He looks malnourished because I guess he is. He had a heart attack a couple of years after the surgery. He now has a pacemaker. The thing is...he thinks he looks fabulous. He is only 60, but he looks and moves like he is 100. I hope you or another family member can help your SIL. emoticon

Way to go on your workout! I'm amazed your mom is even willing to consider new foods...my mom is very opinionated about which foods are acceptable to eat.

emoticon with that kickboxing! What a great workout.

Good luck with how you might deal with the SIL situation. I did a little research on SP about ideal weights. There are several ways to calculate it; but, 130 pounds is definitely within the suggested range for her height. I wonder if she just lost it fast and so her thinness is still surprising? Having seen her, of course, you would know better if she looks unhealthy. Best wishes to her too.
