Life, Death, and Uncertainty

Friday, March 09, 2012

While we plan and assume that we'll wake up tomorrow when the sun appears on the horizon, life can be taken away in an instant, like a puff on the wind. Sometimes we know (or think we do) in advance, and others? Our circumstances can change on a dime.

There was a shooting today on the campus where I teach and study, and several people were killed or injured. I was in no danger at the time (and only learned of the news via the university emergency text message system), but it was a bleak reminder that life-threatening situations really could intrude upon my every day life, a reminder of other tragedies. Life is not quite so certain as it feels sometimes.

A very good reason, then, to start afresh each day, to strive to reach our goals and to be the best version of ourselves that we are able. A very good reason to kiss our loved ones, and to make every moment count. An even better reason to not put off until tomorrow what we can do today, and that includes taking the steps necessary to move towards better health and happiness.

You are so right. My daughter's friend works at WPIC - thankfully he was off yesterday. It does make you appreciate what you have.

First, I am glad that you are all right. What a day you have had! Experiences like the one you describe are sobering, and make one reflective. I wrote a similar blog recently, but for a different underlying reason. Yet, the conclusions were the same: Each day is not promised. There are no guarantees, and we must live each one to the best of our abilities. And to remember our loved ones, without question.

I hope that your day tomorrow is a far better one than this day has proven itself to be.
