Flirting with Crock Pots

Thursday, March 08, 2012

I have long been an admirer of Crock Pots AKA Slow Cookers. I knew their good points & sweet ways, but was playing hard to get. I would shoot coy glances at slow cooker recipes, put them in my folders then callously ignore them. In the end we were reduced to passing notes "I love you, but my life now...it's so complicated." "It's not you, it's me." "Some day soon, I promise we'll get together, but the time is not yet right."

My mother-in-law gave us a wonderful 5quart Crock Pot. I did make a recipe of lentil Sloppy Joes & mull some wine...but mostly our slow cooker languished in obscurity, forgotten in the cupboard with the other neglected pots & pans.

Several things conspired to spark my interest in my forgotten love. Money got tighter, we started getting tired of prepackaged foods, our neighbors kept cooking wonderful smelling food (they're from north Africa...the spices, wonderful spices, yum!), I started working in a book store. The stars aligned & I realized I must end the flirtation & try to build a relationship!

Some online searches & a new cookbook later & MY house is the one filled with the mouth watering aroma... I feel this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

The sad truth is that my kitchen is not really designed to cook in. VERY little counter space/ outlet access. I don't have room on my counter to leave a crock pot, I don't even have room for a toaster! My CP has to sit on the table or the top of the chest freezer (the top of the freezer is my prep area too).

Fantastic! I love my crock pots (I've got 2, but would love an army of them) and use them heavily for a while then lay off, then hot and heavy again...you get the picture. Hehe

Wow...My crock pot sits on the counter as I use it often. I use it a lot in the summer as I do not like to use the oven when it is hot weather. Any time I'm going to use my crock pot, I always make sure to use a Reynolds Slow Cooker Liner ...it makes the clean up so much easier. emoticon ....delicious meal coming soon from my crock pot ! emoticon emoticon emoticon
