I'd be lying if I wasn't a little weary about blogging. Putting all of my thoughts and fears out there, for EVERYONE to read is more than a little bit daunting. I'm just really trying to change my life here, and everything I've read says that blogging, like conventional journaling, is helpful not only because I can get it out on paper, but unlike journaling I could potentially get feedback and support from other sparkers.
So my first topic I would like to discuss is the Eat for your Type diet. I have type A blood and everything that I am reading about says my body would function better and more efficiently if I went to a vegetarian diet. Now, I've been backpacking for six weeks at a time and I know first hand that my body CRAVES protein after like week two. I guess not animal protein though, so now I am trying to get excited about soy proteins and legumes and I think I'll try it for a month. I'm going to still eat maybe one animal protein per day (like an egg or a piece of fish or chicken) but I'm really going to try to steer clear of read meats and pork at least in the beginning. Friday's grocery shopping trip is going to include soy protein and beans.
I'm a little sketched out by being a vegetarian only because I know that my body is going to crave protein - week two on the trail is about the time I start binging on nuts, handfuls at a time.. Soy protein here I come! Wish me luck.

Oh! I'm so excited that you're blogging! It is an amazing source of encouragement for me to read the comments people put up. And I'm so surprised because sometimes I'll start writing a blog and have all these new thoughts and feelings halfway through. By the time I'm finished, I'll have learned something about myself that I didn't even know I need to learn!
Good luck with the vegeterian thing. I'm trying to eat one vegeterian meal per week. I love my meat because, growing up, I lived on a sustenance farm where we raised our own cattle, pigs and chicken.

Great first blog! Every one gets easier.... I think a long time before I ever post a blog, it seems to take me a while to get my thoughts together. Good luck on the Vegetarian diet...I have never tried it.

Good start on the blogging, Lindsey! I like blogging for the record keeping and feedback, and sometimes it's just fun!
I'm on the same page as some of the other posters here, do what feels good for your body....if a particular diet doesn't work for you, don't try to push it. I also rarely eat red meat (I just prefer chicken and fish) but do enjoy the occasional burger....it's all about moderation really, and knowing your limits. Good luck!

Hey Lindsey! Good to see your blog! I don't know about going totally vegan, but I do know that certain food can make me feel sluggish. I eat red meat only occasionally. Mostly fish, rarely anything fried. I go by more of how I feel than totally taking any one thing out of my diet. My daughter went totally vegan for a while until she became anemic. Then added chicken and some other healthy meats to her diet. Good luck! Educate yourself on what you should eat!

Lindsey - Welcome to the world of blogging. One thing you will get here is comments on the things you say and frankly, that's why I blog, I like the interactions.
I am not a nutrionalist, nowhere close, but I have spent most of my life being active and reading a LOT of fitness magazines and books. Like most others out there, I have experimented with all kinds of ridculous diets and exercise programs, but the conclusion that I've learned works best for me is staying active with things I like to do and being smart with my eating. Which to me means watch my portions and I can have anything in moderation. Moderation is the big word here. Being a vegetarian works well for some of my friends, but it wouldn't work well for me, simply because I wouldn't be happy with those kinds of restrictions. As I've gotten older, I've greatly reduced the amount of red meat that I consume and now eat a lot more fish.
To me, Life is good! and it's meant to be enjoyed.

I'm glad you stepped out of your comfort zone to blog - it can be scary!
I've avoided using "diets" persay. I try to focus on overall healthy eating. I'd read the Spark, which is the book the founder of Sparkpeople wrote. I like what he says about just being real with what's out there and to try your best to put healthy stuff in, in moderation.

You may want to consider taking vitamin B12 supplements once you start going strict vegan.

Welcome! I enjoy blogging just because I get all my feelings out there like in a journal as you said. But also as you said I get feedback. If I have an issue, question or just need support someone out there will give me what I need. It's also great when I can blog that "I did it!" and someone posts "Congrats or Way to go!" It makes you feel great!
As for the vegetarian diet, I myself limit red meats but I love my chicken and fish. I try to get protein in other ways like peanut butter, yogurt, milk and cereals high in protein. It makes me feel better to limit red meat but like you I LOVE a good steak. Let us know how your new vegetarian diet goes. I'm thinking about starting a new 40 day Vegetarian challenge.
