Loving and losing a friend

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

My favorite pasttime when Im not with my family is my nursing home family. It never gets any easier to see them pass away. Many of them become extremely close to me.I cry alot but for my sanity have gotten better at remembering their kindness, caring, humor and loving ways.Berniece was only 50 when she started showing signs of alzheimers.A striking Irish lass with red hair, bright green eyes, freckles and a bonnie attitude. She kept losing her car and forgot to get off the bus numerous times. She kept calling her dead dog to come eat and didnt recognize her husband. She never forgot me or Allen(an aide)or Janet her daughter. She called me CHICKIE and kissed me daily.Today she lost her battle and left some very sad friends behind. Her DH came and brought us some food and desserts since we stayed with her through the day.My Daddy died of alzheimers too.I can relate when yall talk about the disease...Have a great night and be sure to hug someone you love in bernies honor emoticonSUSAN

I'm sorry you've lost a dear friend. My daughter does home care and has lost many of the people she has cared for and come to love. I don't know how you do it. It is gift and I'm in awe of people who have it.

You're an amazing woman and very beautiful. I feel so blessed to have you as a friend even though we've never met. Your blogs are thought provoking and often make me smile. You help me remember to be grateful for everything I have in my life. Thank you.

Sorry for your loss. My grandmother's both died in nursing homes. The staff at both places are/were complete angels. Thank you for the work you do!

I'm so sorry you are saying goodbye today. I have a friend who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's last year. I'll love on his family in remembrance of Bernie today.
