Gut flora and obesity

Sunday, March 04, 2012

I'm back home from my latest grad school interview, and while I definitely will not be going there for grad school, I did have a half hour chat with a scientist who studies human gut microbiota.

She didn't have any groundbreaking results to share, but it did sound like flagellated bacteria (as in, having flagella, which are tail-like protrusions that help bacteria swim around and sense things about their environment) may become a hot topic in understanding the link between the bacteria that live in our digestive tract and the size of our waistlines.

Well, that's my fun fact of the day. Happy Sparking!

That is interesting in light of Nourishing Traditions, where she talks about most cultures having a "culture, ie yogurt, sauerkraut," some sort of fermented food source that adds helpful bacteria to the diet.

I wish I had more info to share! This is literally the cutting edge of human gut flora research. They've done a few preliminary experiments that show some sort of a link between this bacterial trait and obesity, but they still have to untangle the "what the heck is actually happening, and what does it MEAN?!" side of the story.

But here's a starting point if you want to read about the technical details of the study that kicked off this whole area of research:

That's really fascinating to me! So what are you hoping to study in grad school anyway... as in, your degree will be in........?

Also, do you read PhD Comics? It's a hoot and a half!!!!!!!
