As some of you know, I have a 78 year old special needs brother, who is visiting me in Florida, for 10 days. Melvin has the mental capacity of a pre-schooler. He has a few little
"rules" that he wants us to follow, while he's here. One of them is that he wants me to go to bed when HE goes to bed. If I don't he'll keep nagging me. Well, last night, after I'd been in bed about 10-15 minutes, just beginning to drift off to sleep, he called me, When I got OUT OF BED to go see what he wanted, he said," Are you going to stay up all night?"

Yesterday, at 5:00 A.M., he woke me up to tell me that the calendar was "broken" because we forgot to tear off February.

Grace, Melvin is so blessed to have you for a sister. You are so patient with him. So many "special" people are just put in homes and no one in the family comes to see them. You are seeing to it that Melvin has a wonderful life. His "rules" and the "broken" calendar story are funny.

Finding humor in situations that could be frustrating is a great coping skill. I'm glad you can see the humor.

Grace, Thank you so much for sharing Melvin with us. God bless you for all you do for him. Melvin was pretty smart to remind you to change the month on the calendar. God bless him too.

You are a wonderful sisiter. Bless your heart. My new son-in-law has a special needs brother and he was best man in the wedding. His only request was that he wanted to wear a favorite pair of shoes.
Thank you for your story. emoticon

What a gift you are to Melvin; but, also, what a gift he is to you! Seeing the world through his eyes gives a beautiful, fresh perspective on life! And reminds all of us why it is young adults who have children!
