Shamrock Shakes and 3 months...

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Thursday, March 01, 2012

Before I get started on the more important of topics, I want to declare that I'm currently winning the battle against the Shamrock Shake. It's a tough one. I LOVE mint and maybe because it's a "limited time" item, I get completely sucked into the hype. On one hand I realize that it is as fake as it gets. Fake ice cream, green coloring and some sort of mint syrup. Ewww. But on the other hand it is pretty, festive and delicious. Anyway, it will be gone here in a few weeks and I can move on to the battle of the Easter Candy. ;)

On to more important business. 3 months from today I will be 39 years young. I really want to get my weight out of the 300's and be done with it!! It's definitely doable as it's 27 pounds away. So now it's up to me to focus and keep my eye on the prize. Losing this weight will also put me well on my way to being at my goal weight by my 40th birthday.

So to this goal, I joined the 5K Your Way team yesterday and am anxious to get going. One of my goals for 2012 is a 5K. There are several coming up and I want to be as ready as I can be. This fits perfectly into my plan for getting out of the 300's.

Don't ya love it when a plan comes together. :)

Im not sure if this is a good suggestion or not
But maybe if you want to get a minty treat try splurging on a pint of dairy free mint chip icecream

The thing about dairy free icecream is its a little more expensive but usually all natural

So youd have the minty icey experience
but since you spent the extra money on it youre less likely to overdo it

Thats how I do things sometimes, because if its pricey I know its a special occasion kind of food.

Also if you buy mint extract, even your morning coffee can be a minty experience!

I love mint shakes too. But I love being fit and healthy more.
I have been faithfully logging my food on SP, and when I see how much fat and calories is in those shakes, I can live without them. They are in the way of my success.

Think of jumping over each one of them that you left in the store, as you train for your 5K run.

I think of it this way-does Angelina Jolie drink Shamrock Shakes? I think not. :)

Can you make your own? Mint extract doesn't have many calories. I buy those little cups of skinny cow ice cream sometimes mix it in other stuff, like coconut milk, a little stevia, touch of green food coloring (if necessary), and whip it up in the blender. Voila! Or just ignore it...either works. Great job fighting the good fight! emoticon

Shamrock Shakes are my second fave next to chocolate. I had a shamrock shake yesterday, drank a few sips and gave the rest to my son. I had my fill for the season. Anyway, good luck, you can do it!!!!

Shamrock shakes were always my downfall for the same reasons that you list. It seemed like McDonalds quit offering them for a few years, but last year I saw them and bought one. They don't taste as good as I remember, so I'm glad I indulged in the calories last year. I'm not even tempted this year!

I am really impressed that you are aiming to do a 5K and you aren't yet at goal weight! :-) That is one of those things I have thought I'd like to do, but I'd have to be thinner first. I'm going to check out the 5K Your Way Team. Why wait? Thanks for writing.

I commend you for sticking to it and not giving in to the Shamrock Shake. I caved once, but it was SO sickening sweet I knew I wasn't going to get one ever again.

Then, just reading NewbieBait's post, I'm all good with shakes altogether....ewwww. I also looked up the nutrition info online and I could practically have an entire meal for the same value as a milkshake....really makes you think.

I LOVE FuzzyBeez recipe! I will definitely have to try it! I do LOVE milkshakes, so when I can't take it anymore I'll definitely tap into that recipe option! :-)

Keep up the good work! I too am doing a 5K training program - The 5K Rookie Runner Program. I'm doing a local 5K in April no matter what size I'm at. I don't want to run the entire thing, but I just want to finish it. :-)

Best of luck to you and can't wait to see how your journey there goes. It's challenging, but worth it. :-)

Congrats on both the new goal and the staying away from the shamrock shake. Here's a suggestion for a healthier 90 cal homemade version. You'll need a large blender or a large ninja machine to make it.

4 cups skim milk
1 pkg vanilla sugar free/fat free instant pudding mix

mix those 2 things together then add in a few drops of mint flavoring and green food coloring....

then add in ice and can keep adding ice til you get a consistancy you prefer....I normally use about 2 to 3 cups of ice.

I then put the mixture in the freezer for about 10 to 20 minutes to thicken and let the flavor infuse. Then a quick whirl on the blender base again and serve.....1 serving is 8 ounces. It should make 5 to 6 servings depending on the amount of ice you use.

It's really yummy and won't blow your calories for the day.

Not to gross you out, but when I was a teen, I worked at different mcdonald's stores with managers that had been all over the country, practicing their mcmanaging skills. After spilling shake mix all over the top of the machine, I was told to just "wipe it up what you can see. Don't worry about it. Those machines don't get cleaned out until they malfunction." Ours was always breaking and they still didn't clean them. Think about how many years your local McD's has been in business....

I so understand the Shamrock Shake issue!! I gave up eating fast foods when I get off for lent and I have been wanting one so bad. I have even said I would get one before work, but I have fought the temptation. Good look on your 5K, I am trying to rum one before the year is out! emoticon

You can do it Girl. Two things I do (Or try to do) when I crave something like Shamrock shakes: 1. Research a healthy alternative. I look up ways to make a homemade one with added nutrition and lower calories. That way I can still enjoy but feel good about it. I bet there are several yummy mint alternative. 2. Find a way to lower your craving factor. For instance if your craving is on a scale of 1 to 10 a 10 you are probably going to cave and get that shake. If it is an 8, most of the time you are going to cave and if it is a 1, the thought is in and out in the same second. The trick is to find a way to lower that craving factor. Have a piece of mint gum or tea, have a piece of fruit, drink some water etc.... Lower the craving factor to a more manageable number. Trick your body and mind into thinking that it can have just as much fun, feel good and be healthy at the same time! Good Luck!

You will love doing the 5K. I did my first one five years ago from the encouragement of my daughters. The rush you get when you finish is amazing. I have since down four half-marathons. Again, a great rush of accomplishment. You are well on your way in completing your first. All you need to do is sign up. I know you will do great. Keep us posted. Thanks for encouragement and will power. You will do this emoticon
