A little sugar - big weight gain - thinking about fueling half-marathon

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

I added some natural sugar in the from of raw honey to my diet and a little more fruit for Vitamin C because it helps me to get over viral infections faster. I do feel better this morning but after increasing carbs to about 120 grams for the last 3 days by I gained 2 1/2 pounds over 3 days. I was not moving much, either, just walked the dogs for about an hour on two of those days. I'm not concerned about the weight gain and it is clearly not all fat, but still interesting.
I think 50-70 grams of carbs (probably more like 30-40 grams net carbs) may be what it takes for me to be at my lowest percentage of body fat. This low-carb journey has been interesting for sure.
I hope to learn more about applying low-carb eating to endurance exercise. If I feel well enough to do the half-marathon this Saturday I'm going to have to decide how many carbs to eat starting today. Given all the carbs the last couple of days my glycogen stores may already be close to full so I think I will keep carbs at about 100 grams total per day and have a few extra carbs, maybe a sweet potato and/or some fruit on Friday night and a banana with my breakfast on Saturday. The paleo summit talks had some info on this topic today but there seem to a range of opinions.

The additional carbs are probably causing at least some of the bloating/weight gain.

Feel better soon emoticon

Green pepper is also a good source of vitamin C. I find that I need much less of C these days, but I try to get a bit of fresh peppers every day. (The red are even higher, but they're SOOOO expensive compared to the green.)

Reading this reminded me of something: you might be experiencing weight gain because of water retention: cold and flu does that, and so does the menses time of the month! It makes a huge difference in my weight!

That's just it! There are always a lot of opinions on everything. That's why this whole thing is so confusing :)
I'm sure the gain you describe is not fat, however, once on a low carb plan this is precisely what will happen every time you go off low carb. So I guess you really have to commit to this long-term.
Also the reason why I'm reluctant to do anything that drastic.
At this point in my life I know that a could not/would not stick with it.
The prescribed 40/30/30 works for me. Though I do struggle with getting enough protein and ideally would like to see 40/40/20.
Well, and so we experiment on.
Really enjoy reading your blogs and learning about your insights.
Hope you'll get over your virus soon.
