I haven't decided about plank positions yet. They are hard to do and make me miserable, which is an indication that they're good exercise, but I'm not sure exactly what it is they are really accomplishing. Except instilling dread in my very soul on core workout day.

Really, best core exercise out there. And it's supposed to be hard!

I agree - such a seemingly simple task, to just hold a position. But they are tough! It is one of my New Year resolutions to double the time I can hold one. I just did it today for the first time in over a month. My time did improve! I also dislike them but I think it is because they are so difficult.

In Jillian Michael's Yoga Meltdown DVD they do rolling planks. Watching that blows me away. I do my own version on my knees... I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to do them the way the ladies in the DVD do.

I did the modified versions on my knees. I can do the full planks now for a little bit. They will make your core stronger. It took me a while. Someday I will be able to hold the full plank for a while.

They also do not make my neck hurt. I had a neck injury in a car accident and crunches make my neck so sore because it is not strong.

I've never tried them. I guess I should.

If you keep doing them, you'll have a core of steel.

I hate planks, but use them in yoga as a indicator of my overall fitness. The longer I can hold it, the bigger victory it is.

The nice thing about planks is that they're way more effective than sit ups and work more muscle groups with less moving around. I like them because I can work my whole body with em. What kind of planks are you doing?
