“Learn to recognize the counterfeit coins that may buy you just a moment of pleasure,
But then drag you for days like a broken man behind a farting camel.”-Hafiz, Sufi poet
Aside from bringing a smile to my face, this quote got me thinking about the false sense of pleasure I may get from things that are destructive to my well being. Things like indulging in a food that is not nourishing, and then feeling terrible afterwards; choosing to be right instead of happy, and then creating friction in relationships; trying to control rather than being open to possibilities, and closing myself off to good things. We all have these addictions or patterns of behavior that keep us from realizing our greatest good. Awareness and acceptance are our way out. For today, when I catch myself not operating in my own best interest, I will breathe, smile, and let go of that f'ing camel!
