We have a very nice local (indoor) Farmer's Market in town, and I haven't been there in months, so after I got home from work this afternoon my husband and I decided to stop by. I've been craving food from one of the vendors there called Sphinx Cafe- they have Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Food. Also, I thought it would be a good idea to check out the fresh produce and prices, but I went mostly for the food!
I got a Greek salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, red and green peppers, green and black olives, 2 rice stuffed grape leaves, feta cheese) topped with chicken and tahini sauce instead of dressing. It was really good! A little higher in calories and fat than I normally do for lunch- but a much needed indulgence.
One of our favorite places to check out at the market is the coffee shop that's there - they always have exotic coffee roasts and great flavored choices, and everyone that works there is always very friendly and helpful. My husband loves dark roasts, and I'm still trying to find my favorite, but I usually lean towards medium roast flavored varieties.
We sampled a Brazilian Sweet Blue coffee that was really good. I've read a lot of articles that talk about kicking the habit of sweetener/cream in your coffee, and they suggest experimenting with different blends until you find one that you enjoy black. I'd say this one is about as close as I have come to enjoying black coffee....just not sure if I'm completely ready to go "naked" yet! We ended up buying a few small packs- A Brazilian Sweet Blue, A Sumatran Blend, and Chocolate Truffle Flavored Coffee (yes, that one is for me!).
There's a Natural Food Market very close to where we were at, so we stopped in there as well. I've been buying sprouted grain bread for the last 2 months and my husband I both really love the flavor (we're whole wheat fans to begin with, so I'm sure that helps). I've been buying Alvarado St brand bread, but I've heard about Food For Life's Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Bread and wanted to give it a try. We found this (and sprouted grain English Muffins too, I might have to try those!) there and also got some freshly ground almond butter to try. I've never had it before, but I'm excited to try some on my oatmeal for the mornings!
I know that some people say that you should look at food as nothing more than fuel, but I think it's important to enjoy the food that you eat, especially when you're trying to lose weight - so that you will feel satisfied with what you eat and not feel like your choices are a punishment. Finding foods/products that I love that are healthy always makes me happy/excited to try them out in new ways and helps to keep me motivated to keep making the right choices!
