A Beef With SparkTrivia
Thursday, February 09, 2012
So, I took the trivia for today, this was one of my questions:
How many calories does a single gram of alcohol contain?
1 calorie 3 calories 4 calories 7 calories 9 calories 0 calories
So, I picked 9 calories. Then, it says I got it wrong, with this explanation:
One gram of fat contains 9 calories, but alcohol is not a nutrient because it cannot be used in the body to promote growth, maintenance, or repair. It is a toxin that is broken down as an energy (calorie) source and can be converted to fat.
Um, excuse me, didn't I say 9 calories? Why did I get it wrong? Just a little irritating, it's late in the day and I'm ready to go home, to boot lol.

I had that question today & I guessed 9 also. This is the explanation:
Alcohol is high in calories, second only to fat in calories per gram (fat has 9 calories per gram; alcohol has 7). If you drink alcoholic beverages regularly, they can contribute a lot of calories to your diet, which can slow or stop weight loss, and promote weight gain. To limit the effect of alcohol on your weight, drink alcohol in moderation (defined above) or only on occasion.

As you read the explanation of why you were wrong, it doesn't say it's a "fat" it's basically a toxin, and has no beneficial merit to your system. i looked this up on other websites and found the same reasons...

It's like that every now and again. If it's there for us to learn, the answers should be correct. When you think you know the right answer, and it's right; what can you do?!?! consider it a learning experience and keep it moving!

I had the same questions and thanx to you, I completed the trivia with 100% today. Sometimes, the questions can be contradictory in relationship to others however, this is the explanation I got:

If you read the articles and take the quizzes, you'll often find contradictions.

Yes it can be frustrating I agree.

Yes, some of the questions seem to be off. But I would just move on...

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram and offers NO nutritional value. It only adds empty calories to your diet. Why not spend your calorie budget on something healthier?
This is where the answer comes from.

I stopped doing trivia when I realized how easy it is to cheat. I do remember that question and the only reason I would have put seven is because I remember what the program told me before.

I took a class in biology years ago. I believe the instructor said it is 9. Just saying.

tigger's trigger=crazy trivia questions
i hate that particular question. i'm with mirage though, i do the trivia to maintain education and awareness. repetition is the best way to remember...except when you repeatedly remember a wrong answer!!!

I was going to say that 7 was the correct answer as well. I do it everyday for self awareness and education. Repetition is the best way to remember. It6's just like reading articles to find out the best way to train, run, eat, etc. I know more about my body now than I did when I played football in College. It paid off and still does in maintaining now.

I do the trivia for points and bc I learn new things. When the explanation doesn't make sense I simply disregard and move on. You're prob just exhausted from a long day. Go home, relax, and have yourself a gin and tonic.

Pure alcohol contains about 7 calories per gram. Fat contains 9 calories per gram. Alcohol is not a fat, nutrient-wise.
Still, I quit doing trivia because it frustrated me, too.
I only use the tools that really benefit me and trivia / frustration doesn't benefit me at all.
Best wishes to you,
