The Birth of the DIY Bride

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

So this has been a crazy good weekend. I got engaged yesterday! now the fun of planning a wedding begins. We plan on getting married almost exactly a year from now in February 2013.

I was totally shocked he took me to one of our favorite places Oakland Nursery. He took me to the greenhouse and got on one knee and popped the question. I was so shocked. I am still so shocked!

We are working with a pretty tight budget for our wedding. Lucky for me I can work as much overtime as I want at my job. Iím going to attempt working 4 12 hour shifts every week. Iíll have 3 days off so hopefully it wonít be too stressful. I have bills that I want to pay off before we get married and I want to pay for our wedding and honeymoon. I really donít want to start our marriage in deep debt but I donít want to have a cheesy wedding either.

To cut down on cost Iím thinking about doing all my invitations/printable materials, favors, and centerpieces myself. The biggest thing that has me worried right now is catering cost, and flowers. I want the decorations to be pretty but I canít justify spending tons of money on flowers that are just going to die. Iím on the hunt for super cute flower alternatives.

I planned to lose weight this year but now the pressure is on. I lost 140 lbs a few years ago but gained back 67. Now I want to lose around 100 pounds before next February. I never reached my goal weight during my first weight lose attempt but I plan to this time. Working so many hours and planning a wedding is going to make it super hard to cook and keep up with a workout schedule. Last time I lost weight my life wasnít very busy so that was my primary focus. This time itís just one of many things that I have on my plate. This week I started a system of cooking some meals ahead so that I can just take my dinner to work or just reheat it if Iím at home. So far its working out very well.

For my workout plan Iím going to do 90 days of Revabs with some additional workouts included. Today I did my first workout and it was super hard. I am so out of shape. This program last 90 days and it is perfect for my fitness level right now. Iíve also been doing wii workouts lately. I really like Goldís gym cardio. The boxing routines are super fun and challenging. I managed to do one a boxing workout this afternoon even though I was worn out from Revabs Power Intervals.

The program is 90 days and I expect that mid way through its not going to challenging for any more even though you change workouts to increase intensity. I plan to start doing Kettleworx along with Revabs once it starts getting easy for me. Kettleworx is the perfect add on workout program because its only 20 minutes and you do 3x a week.

If you time your wedding right, you can get a good deal on local flowers. My friend bought the bare minimum of flowers from a local florist and then went to a wild sunflower field the day before the wedding. Her and her husband took pictures and then they cut lots of flowers for the wedding.

First let me congratulate you on your engagement and good luck with your weight loss efforts.

My son and DIL did a DYI wedding which they chose to be very informal. They held thier reception at the town hall-it was a quaint location on Lake Erie which they got for a song - My DIL and her mom designed and made the invitations - I made the cake (including a seperate gluten-free decorated cake and cupcakes- her grandfather and mother and several other relatives have celiac)and petite cookies. Her parents had the food catered by the local IGA (it was delicious). My DIL is a teacher so thier favors were books which included bookmarks her sister designed and they printed themselves. Her sisters boyfriend acted as photographer. My youngest son was bartender. and her brother was DJ and helped guide the reception. Like I said it was informal and not quite "traditional" and the table settings were bamboo in tall clear straight vases.

While it was not a formal reception everyone had fun and it was very memorable because it reflected thier unique personalities.

Huge congrats on the engagement! Your ring is spectacular!!

I'm also a DIY bride! I'm getting married in October of this year. One of the best resources I've found is TheKnot.com's community boards - there's a DIY and a budget forum, as well as local forums. I have gotten so many fantastic ideas from there so far and more just keep coming! I'm doing my own save-the-date cards, invitations, essentially all decorations, and possibly floral. I'm going with a partial brooch bouquet with silk flowers mixed in. I'm buying it a piece at a time, whenever I find brooches or charms that catch my interest, and I'm using a lot of heirloom family pieces, which will of course be free!

If you're still in Columbus (I saw this blog through the Columbus SparkTeam), let me know if you want to go wedding thrifting or craft store hopping together!

Beautiful Ring.. Congrats on the engaement.

First I suggest you join pinterest.com there are soo many DIY ideas out there. Second I am not doing flowers at all for our wedding.. Right there with you girl- too much money.. My Bouquet is going to be a broach bouquet-garage sales here I come. I have also seen super cute/easy DIY fabric flower boquets. I am thinking about those for my bmaids or they are going to carry a clutch.

Second we are paying for the majority of our wedding- granted my parents are taking care of the food and beer which is going to be a huge cost, but I was soo stressed.. Now that we have started stuff its pretty manageable.. We are getting are downpayments made and then we are going to make monthly payments to our photographer etc until they are paid in full.

    Congratulations!! Love Oakland Nursery!!
I'm planning a wedding too! October of this year! I plan on doing my own flowers, corsages and bouts for the bridal party and family along with the help from a bridesmaid (we met while working at a flower shop). My mom is doing centerpieces, my (future) mother in law is doing favors (pretty & delicious cookies) and my MOH is doing my cake. Ask around, you never know what kind of hidden talents your friends and family have!
