Hike of a Century
On February 1st, I was able to join three friends on one of those great experiences of a lifetime. We hiked up the highest peak in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco together. Two friends are SparkPeople members – TAZMOMSGOL and BRZLLASS. I was privileged to be able to participate. The plan was all TAZMOMSGOL and had been “hatching” for some time. You can read all about it at her blog post… www.sparkpeople.com/mypa
The hike was about 8.5 km UP a mountain with a tricky cobblestone road way that went up and down, up and down, and mostly up. It took us 3 hours and 10 minutes. I regularly walk 5 km on level paths with mostly sidewalks in about 30 – 40 minutes. Altitude, the rocky road, and steep inclines made for slow going, but we all four made it to the top and we’re able to celebrate a goal completed and a job well done.
I was the youngest of the four, but believe me I was not running ahead of any one. All of us were challenged. Of course, our leader, TAZ, was the best and most prepared! The next day my calves hurt a little and two days later one of my knees was a little stiff, but no big problems. I am inspired to keep on walking and prepare better for a possible repeat performance next year! Maybe next time we can go up and DOWN in a big round trip marathon!
This week, I’m “home again!” It seems I say that a lot. But don’t worry, I’ll be gone soon enough! In just a few days I’ll be getting ready for a big retreat weekend out on the island camp – Carnaval Retreat. We are expecting a record number and there’s much work to be done in preparation. As chief menu maker, grocery buyer and kitchen supervisor, I’ll have my hands full. But for now, I’m focusing on homeschool, good healthy cooking and positive thinking!
