Scary Moment/Challenges

Monday, February 06, 2012

Kind of a fly-by blog this morning, but I wanted to check in with my Spark Peeps!

Yesterday at the gym I had a little bit of a scare. I work out with a friend a few days a week, and she wanted to run intervals, which we usually do Monday, Wednesday, Friday, because she was going to be out of town today. I'd already done the elliptical, but I figured, "What the heck?"

I had a really good run (for me). Cut five minutes (FIVE!) off my pace!

Afterward, when I went to lift, I got completely lightheaded. I think I was just dehydrated, but still... I drank some water and sat for a bit. Then drank some more water and sat for some more... I ended up not lifting at all.

I went to the store and grabbed a sports drink, and that made me feel better almost instantly.

Got to lift today now...

Today will be interesting food and water wise because I got called in for jury duty. They don't allow food, water, cell phones or reading material in the building. Since I cut the carbs, my blood sugar has been much better, but this will be an interesting day in Wellness Land.

I'll have to report back later.

Love ya! Have a healthy week!

Wow, maybe you should keep a sports drink with you at the gym, just in case.

What kind of courthouse does not allow water in the building? That's really stupid. I can understand the cell phones and stuff, even food I suppose, but WATER? I would complain LOUDLY about THAT! Those people are lucky I'm not on that jury...

Anyway, good luck to you with that! I hope it goes quickly. :-)

Hydrate regularly, and research the importance of electrolyte replenishment. That's why the sports drink worked for you.

Just tell the foreman and bailiff that you are diabetic and require special diet. The courts can afford it. Just walk the courthouse on each break. You'll make it through.

When I head out to the YMCA, I always take a protein bar and water. I do an hour water aerobics before going to the weight room. If I had a light breakfast I eat the protein bar before going in to use the weight machines, treadmill and bikes. The water always goes in the weight room with me, I take a 17 oz bottle.

Hope things went well for you at court today.

I found that if I'm working out over 60 minutes, I *absolutely* need to refuel. For me, water wasn't enough if I was going to do anything over 80 minutes. I didn't do anything "fancy" -- I took my water and added 1/2 scoop of shakeology (full of nutrients, protein and 70cal). It isn't "much" but it's got all those nutrients, plus the hydration.

If it's under 60 minutes, I still like getting in water sips. I ALWAYS hydrate at least 1 pint of water for 45-60 minutes working out. :)

Shoot! Forgot to say...at this time when I was experiencing dizziness and trying what would work, I stumbled upon a scientific article that explained you HAVE TO refuel more than water at about 80 minutes or you start breaking down muscle rather than "burning fat" like we always think it does.

I hope jury duty doesn't do you in. I think they probably have drinking fountains there. If you aren't selected they usually let you go early and that would mean not so long without a snack.

Wow I hope they will give you at least one break during jury service! Like Woubbie said, I hope you had a huge breakfast! I am really jealous though: I can't wait for them to call me for jury service!
I totally know what you mean about the lightheadedness. It happened to me once at work, during my first week of low carbing. I think it was partly due to my body adjusting, but I definitely did also go too long inbetween meals and I think my blood sugar levels did drop far too low. Now you know, you'll be able to keep a better eye on things.
And way to go with that exercise! You're killing it emoticon

Hope you ate a big breakfast!

Sounds like your blood sugar may have dropped too low. One of the reasons I eat frequent little snacks is that I tend to hypoglycemia, and will get woozy if I go too long without eating. The good news is that low carb extends how long I can go between meals or snacks. I still have to watch though. Four hours seems to be about my max. That's one reason I don't begrudge myself 4 peanut M&M's a day. That little bit of sugar keeps me from having to manufacture the glucose myself during the most active part of my day.

I couldn't go to court without my water or gum. I hope you will be all right.
