#523: Goodbye Little Thang

Sunday, February 05, 2012

Anyone who is or who has been a pet lover knows how hard this is to write. Last night at 11:00 one of my beloved kitty babies passed away.

She came to my house at the beginning of 2004, along with Brownie, another stray cat. I named her Little Thang because she was skinny and such a cute lil 'ol thang. When I brought them inside after deciding to keep them, she seemed happy to have a home and accepted her new status with contentment.

But during the past two weeks she began climbing on my bed and crawling on top of me, resting her face in my neck. I'd pet her as I read then hold her while I slept.

In the last few days she had become thinner but yesterday, other than a couple of small bites, she ignored her food and wouldn't drink water. She didn't seem to be in pain and never once cried out. I held her to my chest as her buddy, Thumper the Shepherd, looked at us and nudged Little Thang with her nose.

It was always funny watching the two of them together, Little Thang licking Thumper's face as if she were cleaning it and then Thumper licking Little Thang, leaving doggie slobber all over Little Thang's face.

Last night, Little Thang became much weaker but the vet's was closed and the emergency vet clinic wasn't open so I cuddled with her in bed lying next to her as she stretched out on a cool sheet.

But then Thumper, who had climbed on the bed and again was nosing Little Thang as if to say, "Let's play," began whimpering. Little Thang stretched her head and looked back at me, moved her lips, shuddered and passed on.

Some may think me crazy, but just as I had been telling her how much she was loved and what a good kitty she was, I believe she was telling me it was time for her to go.

Death is not a welcome guest, even though we all know it is inevitable.

For me, there has been so much of it the past few years as relatives, friends and pets departed, that I wonder how there can still be so many tears left to flow down my face.

Although I am blessed to still have Thumper, Brownie, and another stray I adopted, Baby the Boxer, with me, the house seems empty. The dogs sense my sadness and seek petting. Thumper has been going into the bedroom and out then back in looking, I'm sure, for Little Thang, her buddy.

I know there will be many happy memories to help soften the sad times of the future and that I will likely need to go through this again but for now I will cry unashamedly and believe Little Thang knew she was loved for the eight years we had together.

R.I.P. Little Thang. I firmly believe we will meet again one day. emoticon

So sorry about your kitty. I lost my cat just over a year ago. She had been my birthday present for my seventh birthday party, so we grew up together. She was nineteen when she died of old age, but no time is a 'good enough' time to lose a beloved pet. :(

Sorry for your loss. I have been there also many times. My son loss his dog last year. It was so hard on him even being a married man with family.

When he told me how fast the dog dropped to the ground out the back yard and he laid there with his heart raising so high. He knew his best pal was about to pass on. How he held is paw and told the dog. Go ahead little fellow. You can go. I know it is your time. We loved you so much. . You loved us. I find it hard to write this. I dont think tears will ever stop dropping when a loved animal dies.I cannot even finish the rest. My tears are streaming at this moment. emoticon

Bless you dear one.

There is nothing like the loss of a dear pet to hurt the heart. I am close to losing my dog of 18 years and want to stop time where it stands to prevent the inevitable. emoticon

You did an amazing and great thing with Little Thang, giving her a warm, safe home with plenty of food and great friends who loved her too. She had a better life than many cats who end up as strays. And poor Thumper will moarn for a week or more but with your kind heart, will get thru this loss with you as you both go thur it together.

gentle hugs of comfort for you and Thumper

Hugs to you Lou. It is a very das time when we lose our pets. So glad she had you as her owner right to the end and that she wanted to be with you when she died.

I miss my little Abby and Bizkit, but have lots of wonderful memories as I am sure you have to.

    Lou,

Sorry to hear of your loss. I also believe it is hard to lose a pet. I had a Golden Retriever that I had for 13 years and I cried for days when he died, and still think of him.

Oh, LOU! I have tears in my eyes! Only someone who has watched their dear pet pass away can understand the anguish of losing a pet. Our sheltie, Ginger, passed away at 13, and of course, Drex was out of town on a school weekend field trip! I am just so sorry that your baby died; I am glad she was with you and Thumper to the end, though. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Gosh Lou so sad to hear of your pain & tears you are going thru..Even today It's difficult to think of my siamese cat who lived to be 18 yrs. I cried my heart out, I had to tell her it was ok to go. I heard her last dying sigh..Yet I was almost to the vets & he tried to bring her back. I just disolved to tears..So I understand your pain..It was wonderful you could be there to help her on her journey to pet heaven.. emoticon

Little Thang was so lucky to have found you - as any animal would be. She had many years of being loved and cherished, something all animals deserve. I loved reading about how Thumper gave Little Thang so much loving attention.

Take care my friend and know that you are in my thoughts.

She knows she was loved and it's so nice that you could
be there with her & comfort her last few minutes here
on earth.

Love you, warm emoticon

Death is never easy for those it leaves behind. But it sounds like you made her departure a warm, safe and loving one. I believe that animals' souls are just as acute as our own, and I am sure that she was grateful for your comfort in her last days.

You were a good Dad!

I send you thoughts of warmth and healing in this difficult time.

Awww.. I'm so sorry for your loss. You know, usually animals hide when they're sick or know that they're about to leave us, but your little thang chose to spend her last moments with you. That says a lot about you Lou. I hope that soon your memories will bring smiles instead of tears..

God bless you Lou. You never have to be ashamed to cry about your pets to me. I have 15 strays and you know about my #16 pups at one time. They are my children each and everyone. They were left at my doorstep for a reason and we give them a good home till they must move on. It is my gift to the lord for giving us such loving creatures that even as someone is tossing them aside, they welcome my husband and I with open hearts. God bless.

The pain is great, but the joy is greater. You've written a lovely tribute. QEII said 'Grief is the price we pay for love.' I guess it is - but how wonderful you had LT in your life.
