Managing to Maintain Motivation

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Saturday, February 04, 2012

Tomorrow will be my 400th day on SparkPeople. That is 400 days of consistently making healthy choices and building a better ME. Although my journey has certainly not been perfect, my MOTIVATION has never waned.

In fact, Sparkers frequently ask me HOW I've managed to maintain my motivation over time. After all, most people understand HOW to lose weight and to get healthy, but sometimes just end up losing their way, despite their best intentions.

Yet, in order to successfully lose weight and keep it off, you must be enormously motivated! And staying the course seldom means taking the easy route. Counting, measuring, logging, and burning day, after day, after day is really difficult. Such persistence requires a LOT of motivation to succeed!

Well, I believe it is absolutely critical to figure out the REAL reasons you wanted to lose weight in the first place. These reasons are the seeds from which your motivation will bloom.

Motives for losing weight are not the same for everyone. While some people want to drop pounds in order to be healthier, others simply want to be able to look good wearing cute clothes. Still others have an important event like a wedding or a reunion to get ready for.

The point is, you have to bond with the TRUE reason you want to lose weight in order to maintain your motivation over the long haul.

Then, find ways to continually remind yourself why you are working so hard to achieve your goals. Write your motive on a post-it and stick it to your bathroom mirror. Jot it down above the grocery list on your fridge. Even consider repeating your motive out loud to yourself whenever you are tempted to make poor choices. If you genuinely connect with what drives you to succeed, you will be unstoppable!

So, what is MY personal motivation?

The REAL and TRUE reason I wanted to lose weight was to be healthy. I want to be an active participant in my own life and to be a positive role model for my family. And my biggest reason I want to be healthy is my 4-year-old son, Sam. I want to be AROUND to watch him grow up.

My Motivation: Little Man Sam

So if YOU are struggling to stay motivated on your own journey, I challenge you to reflect on what prompted you to begin your weight loss. What is the REAL reason you want to reach your goals? Then hang onto that vision each and every day to sustain your spark.

Congratulations on finding and maintaining your motivation! There is nothing like it! I found it once when I was quitting smoking! Everything just clicked! It was amazing! I've not found it fully yet with my weight but cannot wait for things to 'click' regarding this as well. Thank you for your encouraging blog and for your love for little Sam! He is lucky to have a Mom like you!

What a wonderful attitude you have! Your blog is truly inspirationsl, so PROUD of you! Seen so many blogs that describe on/off. in/out, determined/discouraged and that does happen to all of us sometimes, but I have seen some of these people repeat these over and over, they just don't appear to be truly commited! Easy to see that you ARE! Continued success!

I really needed to read this today. I have not been on Spark People for almost a month because of some personal issues that had been going on. Thankfully, I have maintained my weight (only gained back 1.5 pounds), but I still felt so guilty about losing focus.

Reading your post made me examine why I am doing this, and encouraged me to get back on track. Thank you for being transparent and willing to share your journey with others!

/motivation_articles.asp?id=349Hi Jenn245,

Thank you sharing your thoughts. I have started to gain weight after reaching after getting down to 225 lbs and I think that is because I have forgotten what i want to accomplish. Reading your post reminded me that I want to be healthy and make my wife and family proud of me as well.

I have decided that I need to do a better job of managing my food in take and make exercise a daily habitat.

you make me rethink my "poor me" thoughts
all i have to do is buckle down and lose the same 15 pounds i have lost numerous times
and then determine to keep it off
perhaps paying more attention to the why question--my motivator--will help
anyway, you should be very proud of yourself
i pray God will bless you will many years of health and happiness with that adorable son of yours

Great blog post! I'm impressed by your determination and drive. Your last question, asking what was the real reason behind one's goal to lose weight, has me examining what my own motivations are. That's a good thing, and your wisdom was a big help. Thanks!

You have motivated me to continue my consistency in what I am now doing to lose my weight and be healthy. Your before and after pictures are also motivating. My reason for taking on this life changing weight loss journey is to look like I did when my husband met me. I remember the day we moved in together. My daughter was helping and we got silly and ran up 3 flights of stairs just to see who would get to the top first. It was a tie. I want to be able to have fun again!

Fantastic story - I also am motivated to be a positive role model for my young children age 6 and 8. I used to hide it from them that I had a problem but now I share my healthy eating and exercise ideas with them ie I try to incorporate them into every day life - hoping to make good habits for them emoticon emoticon
