Hey there, this is Vana and I have decided to start a blog for those who have wanted to learn more about me.
I am a mother of one daughter named Melissa who now have two beautiful children. My grand children are Julissa and Austin, I love them dearly but because they live over the mountains from me I don't get to see them but a few times each year.
I work close to full time at a sporting goods store and I just love the people that I work with. I live in the Beautiful Pacific Northwest of the United States and have friends all over the world.
I am a huge JRR Tolkien fan and have been since I was in the 7th grade. Because of this love of Tolkien I got involved with an online site when I first heard about some movies being made back in early 2000. This was my first experience with online communities and it has been a very good one. I have met many of the people around the world that I have chatted with on that site about common interests and our love of Tolkien.
I was one of those nuts who flew half way around the world almost to go see the release of the third movie with about 1600 of those other nuts on that site in costume. I met many of the people whom I had been chatting with for almost 2 years by that time. I found that people on the internet are very special and not all criminals or weird or anyone to be afraid of. (I know there are those out there too but I have never met any so far)
Anyways one of these dear friends of mine on that site mentioned that she is a member here when I started a thread there about getting fit in 2012. So she encouraged me to come here for the tools and the help that I would find and support of others who have been through some of what I have been through or those who are on the same journey at this time in their lives.
So I came on to this site on January 12, 2012 and joined. Since then I have lost 11 pounds and made so many new friends here.
I am lucky in that I live where I can walk most of the time and see nature at its best!! I live in the country and love the scenery. I am a newly wed of 3 years. My husband is so very understanding and my biggest supporter of what I set my heart to. He keeps telling me I am beautiful just as I am but if I want to lose weight then he is behind me all the way.
I was on Weight Watchers some 20 years ago and lost over 70 pounds. It has a great program but I have a health issue that caused me to get sick and due to medications I gained the weight back plus some. This is very common if people lose weight and gain it back.
I don't want to yoyo my weight all my life. I know that for my own health I need to get it off and keep it off.
Let me back up a minute. I have an autoimmune disease that I was diagnosed with back 1970. I have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. I have actually been very lucky in that I am able to tell when I am getting sick or going into a flare. I also have a great doctor who listens to me when I tell him things aren't right. So he is quick to help me get the treatment that I need to get things back into remission. I will never be cured but I can manage it and live a full life.
Back in 2004 I started having some trouble with one of my feet. I am a cashier so I am on my feet all day. Well I was having some swelling and during the night if I had to get up, I almost could not walk at all. Putting pressure on my foot about killed me with pain. It took two years to get my doctors to listen to me cause every time I could get in I had been off my feet for 24 hours and so there was no swelling present. Finally my Lupus doctor heard me complain too and said that he would get me an appointment with a doctor who deals with foot issues.
So I went to this other doctor and he took less then 5 minutes to tell me that my foot had a major problem, it was freezing up. So he x-rayed my foot and found the bones were fusing from Arthritis. inflamation So they had to operate to fuse the arch of my foot to keep the bones from rubbing and causing more damage. So the surgery was in August 2006.
At the same time that I was finally getting the cast off of my foot, my mother's aorta ruptured. She was rushed to the hospital and they managed to save her life but it had damaged her valve so she had to have a valve replacement. Her recovery was long and drawn out because she has a major reaction to narcotics which they kept giving her for the pain. My mother and father were both concerned that it could be a medical condition in the family and they told them it does not run in families. Okay we were all relieved by that bit of news.
Well 15 months later I was going to pick out some sandals to wear to church for Easter Sunday in March of 2008, we were going to talk to the man who we wanted to marry my husband and I. I never got those sandals either. We went to the first store and as I turned to look at some sandals that my fiance pointed out to me there was a pop in my chest and pain like I can barely describe. The pain pulsated up from my middle back to my neck in the front and I could not move or talk. I stood frozen in pain. My fiance was behind me and did not understand why I froze and he could not see my face. When the pain finally passed I felt sick to my stomach and had cold clammy sweats. I had to sit down. We thought about going home but I decided that I wanted to go to the hospital because heart problems do run in my family. We got to the hospital and I had to walk down this long hallway and could not find a wheel chair or anyone to help us. When we finally found the emergency room I walked in and laid my forehead on the counter and sobbed, they had me instantly in a wheel chair and into the back room. My fiance only had to mention chest pain. After a few tests they confirmed that my aorta ruptured. I was rushed to Seattle's University Hospital. When I arrived the emergency team was coming in to meet me. It was a doctor that works at the VA hospital but does on call for the University and just happens to be the best in his field. So I got the best team with the most experience. Someone was truly watching over me.
The doctor here said that with my mother having had the same just 15 months before that the entire family needed to be checked. So they all went in to their doctors for tests. Turns out my daughter is the only one who seems to have any thing that looks like it could become the same issue so they are treating her now to prevent it from happening to her.
Because of all of this and my recovery time I had just 4 months to plan our wedding which was scheduled for August of that year. We made it and I was the blushing bride as was the aim.
Since then we have had a blissful life, neither of us having any serious health challenges come up that were not there before.
I never mentioned it but I met my husband at a group gathering for the website for Tolkien that I joined when a bunch of us decided to meet in Seattle for what is called a moot or gathering of friends to discuss things and get to know one another. I had been friends with his sister for a few months and he had just joined so he came along. It was immediate attraction for both of us but neither of us said anything till at least a month later. In fact we didn't talk to each other that day at all.
Well since we met we have both gained a bit of weight and both have been discussing watching what we eat. We try to walk but sometimes with my pain I find it difficult so we never really got to do much also with Lupus you can not spend a lot of time out in the sun and we don't really have many shady areas to walk in.
So like I said this winter for some reason I just purposed in my heart to become healthier and more active. I don't want to be winded or gasping for breath every time I climb stairs or have to sit out activities with our friends and co workers.
So this is my mantra:
The cues and clues I will give you are these:
1) If you truly crave something and you can eat a small portion and then walk away and get back on program - then do it! But remember to get right back on your program to lose weight.
It is easier to give in a little now and then instead of blowing it and staying off and doing whatever you want because you feel bad about it. Do limit how often you do this too!!
2) Eat foods you like! Don't force yourself to eat foods that you really do not find good or enticing at all. You wont stick with it!!
You have to be able to live it!! Eating good foods that you like is the only way to go. Find ways to fix your favorite foods in a healthier version. Graham Kerr was a genius about that, he was known for years as the Galloping Gourmet but has changed all his recipes to more fit and leaner versions. Thumb's Up Limit portion size as well.
3) Do this for you!! Remember where you are starting from.
Make a list of why you want to lose the weight and then keep a diary or journal about your progress and how each success makes you feel. Such as when you can go up a flight of stairs and not feel exhausted or out of breath. When you go down a size in pants, shirt or whatever measurement you use to keep an eye on your success.
4) Find someone in your area who is willing to walk with you or help to encourage you to keep at it. Some one who will notice the changes you are making.
This gives you more accountability for your choices and in following through with this program. Also talk with your doctor and make sure that the choices you are making are in agreement with his plans for you. He may even have some suggestions on where to find the best vitamins and such.
5) Do get on a good multivitamin since you want to be sure you are getting all the proper nutrients while cutting some of the things out of your diet.
Remember that you also need some good fats to lose weight and keep your insides working properly. No one can lose weight and totally cut out fat, your body wont work if you do!! You need it for digestion!
6) Eat lots of fruit and veggies and be sure they are fresh when at all possible. Frozen is better then canned because canned has more sodium.
Make these your mantra and it will surely help to keep you on track!!!
I have copied this from my computer desk top where I have made my mantra a part of what I see everyday!!
Now as to what kind of a person I am. I am a fun loving very friendly person. I love to be upbeat and helpful. I enjoy music of many kinds but my most favorite is soothing or Celtic music.
I am a dreamer and a romantic who loves to dance beneath the stars and especially the full moon. I have glow in the dark stars in my bedroom where I have my own little universe!!
I love my blue jeans and pretty tops. I am not even sure I own a dress anymore. I love romantic and chic flic movies. I enjoy things about ghost hunting and mind games like Sudoku!
I have a kitty named China, She is all white with pink ears and a pink nose. She loves her mommy and wants to sleep with me but that is not allowed since I am actually allergic to her to some degree. She wants to sleep on my right shoulder with her paw reaching out to touch my cheek. It is really sweet but since I am fighting the hives I don't dare let her in my bedroom. She will rush in to cuddle when I settle in on the couch to watch a movie. She has to be on my leg and sleeping cuddling me.
We also have two Betta fish that we got for China to watch. She loves her boys and has never done anything to get too near them but she loves to watch them.
Neither of us have any family in town here but his mother is on the island so we can drive to see her and it is only an hour and a half drive. His sister is about an hour south of us and my brother is in another town about an hour south of us. Neither of us drink or smoke so we don't have that worry concerning our health.
The one concession we have made is that we will have pizza once a week if we can afford it. We love Papa Murphy take and bake pizzas. But we eat healthy or at least I do the rest of the week. I take a weight watchers meal for lunch every day and two pieces of fruit for my breaks.
I have gotten all temptations out of the house. The only sweets we have here now are apples, bananas, oranges and grapes. I cant wait for summer to get the melons that I crave. Right now they are way too expensive and not fresh fresh if you get my meaning.
I love massages and being pampered when I can get it!! But doesn't everyone??
I have not been on this site for a full month yet and have already been asked to be the team leader for two of the group teams that I belong to besides the one I started. So I am in this for the long haul!!
But my main goal is to get "Fit For Life"
