Before Christmas, I told my husband that the only thing I wanted as a gift was a gym membership. My wishes were not granted but...he got me a DVD workout program somewhat similar to the P90x called Weider X Factor ST. The first week of January, we tried doing the workouts together, then he got bored. According to the program, you should do the workouts every other day, and one DVD a week (for 8 weeks). Finding myself fairly out of shape, I couldn't keep up at this pace, and took 2 weeks to keep going through the Week 1 workouts until I felt like I was ready to move on to the next set. I did the next DVD once, and was sore for almost 3 days after. I knew I needed to get out of the house and get some workouts in away from home (to keep my motivation up), and decided I should get back into Zumba. I'd taken classes before a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I enrolled to take classes at a Dance Studio nearby and got a punchcard to sign up for 8 classes.
Around this time, my husband approached me to talk about our fitness plans, here's how the conversation went:
Him: "Honey, I was thinking..."
Me : "Yes, dear?"
Him: "We should get gym memberships. I don't feel motivated enough to get a good workout at home."
Me : "Oh...so you admit that I was right in the first place?"
Since I had already signed up for Zumba classes, I told him to go ahead and join and I'd eventually start going with him. He decided to go to our local YMCA, and I went with him as a guest twice last week. It felt great to get in some weight training in addition to my other cardio! Plus, I looked into the classes that they offer, and they're all included with the membership (a lot of gyms in this area charge extra for fitness classes).
Well, last night at Zumba our instructor announced that there would be no class Thursday or Saturday because she was going away. I tried to think about what I was going to do the rest of the week to keep getting my workouts in...and I decided that I might as well join the Y with my husband. We went today and got in some good cardio/weight training, and I feel great!! I'm excited to try Zumba there also to see how it compares to the other class I'm taking.
Initially I didn't want to spend the extra money, but I'm thinking of all of the money we're saving with our lifestyle changes in the past month (no fast food, no takeout, no soda, energy drinks, etc) and I decided that it was worth the investment!! Plus, going to the gym with my hubby is an added bonus for our motivation - we can keep each other on track.
I'm thinking that I'll eventually get back into the workout DVDs, maybe once I've lost some more weight and get into better shape.
