Okay, So Plan B

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

My shins continue to give me serious pain when I'm running, and now even with walking, so I'm thinking I need to go to a Plan B for fitness. I liked running because it was solitary - my time with my body is kind of MY time, and I don't really want to take a class - because it required little in the way of equipment and because I could do it pretty much anywhere.

I'm thinking about switching up to something in the water - laps, probably. I'd do cardio machines, but they're so boring. I know I need to find something I enjoy enough to stick with it. Once it gets closer to summer, hiking can be what I do, at least part of the time. And maybe once my shins heal more, I'll be able to go back to walking during the week.

So... re-tooling what I'm gonna do for my body. NOT going to feel like I failed somehow because running isn't going to happen at the moment.

So sorry to hear about the shin splints. They're rotten - I suffered through them last year. It took some time off from running to allow everything to heal up properly. I elevated my legs as often as possible when at home, too.
Someone else mentioned the elliptical. It is a good alternative. It's great too that you can opt for a swim instead. Have you considered biking?

Here's to you feeling better soon!

Take care of those shins, for sure. You're really smart for backing off before an injury sidelines you completely. The hardest thing for me, sometimes, is not pushing through the pain. I did it on Saturday and now my trainer is making me not run for a few days. I'll be cross training right there with you.

I love the elliptical machine at the gym--the motion is easy on the joints, but you can really sweat! Some people listen to music, but I read. I always get a large print book from the library, because my reading glasses kept slipping off my sweaty nose! And sometimes I'll take Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life, and squint at the affirmations, then repeat them with gusto to the beat of the music the club plays.

Pool workouts are also great. Best of luck to you!

Do you have shin splints? You'll get back to running soon. In the mean time enjoy a good swim emoticon

I *love* swimming! Especially when my knee is bugging me, but I still want to work out.
I like running in the pool as well. If running in the shallow end bugs your shins, you can "run" in the deep end so that your feet don't touch the bottom.
