Soooo, I got back onto SparkPeople April 2009. I had a treadmill and I was walking. I was moving my body and I was doing some Coach Nicole Videos. I joined some groups and made some friends. Running Friends. :)
I thought, well I can run too. And I started running. Well that's what I'll call it. I started the C25K Program and June 20th....if that's what you want to call it. I moved so slow that it took me and hour to complete week 1 day 1! (it's okay, I'm laughing at that too! An hour!! WOW! At least I can finish it on time these days!)
I didn't know anything about running about nutrition about drinking water about fueling my body, but I kept moving. I just kept going.
I learned from my running friends and articles and anything I could read about running. I got better and yes, faster.
I would try all kinds of running plans. Hal Higdon Jeff Galloway Darby - the writer of a great book for women about running, Womens Running Magazine, C25K.... oh the list goes on and on.
I was losing weight and gaining and losing and gaining, but I did lose to my goal by November. And I've kept it off, save for a few 4-5 pounds gains here and there, which I lose again.
I've had one after another after another injury. Actual injuries (two falls), but many many overuse injuries. Why is that? Well because running isn't a quick fix. You have to treat your body right. Feed it right. Fuel it right. Rest it right. Yes, rest it.
Greg McMillan says: You are an experiment of one. And after several years (yeah I just said years) of trial and error, I've finally found a formula that works for me.
For as much as I want to run like the wind, like my good Spark Buddies, that's just not gonna happen for me. I have a permanent spinal injury when I fell a few years ago, it damaged my tailbone, not at the end of my tailbone like I've always though, but at the top of my tailbone where it connects to my back/pelvic and hip bones.
No wonder my hips hurts! I can't put too many miles on it too quickly because I get all out of whack. And then my knee hurts and then my shin hurts and then my big toe hurts. And well I'm on RICE recovery for weeks at at time, icing my knee when it's my tailbone injury that's causing all the commotion.
But it's taken A LOT of time and X-rays and multiple doctors and patience on my part to figure this out.
Like I said, running isn't a quick fix. Lot of people want to run with me and that's great! I love that, and they've gone on to lose weight keep it off run races and kept on running!! But it didn't happen overnight. And they had to find out what works for them. Just like I had to find out what works for me.
You need to find out what works for you. Be your own experiment and enjoy the journey along the way! :)
