Just say NO to Applebees

Monday, January 30, 2012

One day a week me, my sister and niece have a girls time and we hang out and we dine out. So Sunday we decided we would go to Applebees. My normal routine if I go out to eat is get the nutritional facts and then determine what I will eat before I get there. So I saw there 550 and under menu and decided on the Weight Watchers Chipotle Lime Chicken with 490 calories and 12 grams of fat I thought ok I am all set.

So I order that and a side salad with light Italian dressing. But as I was waiting for my food something kept nagging at me - I forgot to check the sodium (I usually do this first because restaurants are notorious for high sodium) - but for some reason I overlooked it. So I pulled out my smartphone and looked it up thinking it will be about 1000 - 2000 mg of sodium which is high for one meal but every now and then I splurge on the sodium. So I got down to the meal I just ordered and I had to do a double take. The sodium was not 1,000 mg not 2,000 mg not even 3000mg but a whopping 4,990 mg - OMG!!! (that is over 2 days worth of sodium). I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT.

And what was even worse as I looked through the nutritional facts almost everything was high 2,000mg or higher - like I stated earlier I know restaurants have high sodium but this was the worse thing I had ever seen - seriously Applebees what's up with all the sodium.

Needless to say I didn't eat that - my sister took it home to her husband and I ate 2 chicken nuggets off my niece's plate, some broccoli off my sisters plate and my salad (only a little of the salad dressing, it wasn't listed on the nutritional facts but based on the other sodium I was afraid of how high that was going to be). Until Applebees take that sodium down some I will not be eating there anymore.

Wow, almost 5g of sodium in a meal! Are you kidding me? Thanks for posting about this. That item is definitely off my list, but then, when I go to restaurants now, I generally just get a salad with grilled chicken. No dressing.

Thats ridiculous!! One of the great things that I do my best to do all the time, is read the label! Uugh. Applebees, and others like it, just want it to taste good enough for us to come back. I have started ordering my food with a To Go Plate so that as soon as I feel full, I drop it in and not have to wait for the waiter/waitress. I noticed that when I waited, I ate more and was miserable on the way home.

Good Job Tiff! Keep Sparkin

Good job. I am not sure I would have even thought about the sodium amounts. I would have looked at the calories and fat and not thought about it again. Not sure why there would be a need for this much sodium.

Wow, great information. This probably is true of all the big chains that compete with Applebees too, to a greater or lesser degree anyway.

OMG! That's ridiculous and hard to believe. I'm glad you shared this, because Applebee's use to be one of my favorite places to eat. You did a great job of avoiding your meal and eating something else instead. It's amazing the things we find out about the foods we eat when we look it up. I remember emailing TGIFriday's asking them the nutritional information of the Sizzling Chicken. It was 1200 cal/ 25g sat fat/1g trans fat/124 g carbs/2930 mg sodium. Now that I know the ranges of calories, fat, carbs, sod, etc. I am making better choices too. Good job! emoticon

I am with you...I happened to check Applebee's nutrition list the other day andwhen I saw the high amount of sodium even for the lower calorie items I was shocked. Even the "smallest" amounts were more than entire day's requirement for sodium. As someone with heart disease it is important to watch the sodium amounts. Unfortunately I am afraid most restaurants are the same.

That is truly sad. I kind of understand the higher salt content in packaged foods - as a preservative. But for a restaurant where the food is being prepared to abuse salt that heavily just speaks very poorly about their own faith in the natural flavors of their food.

Glad you thought to look before you ate!
