I am finally getting together an exercise program that gets positive results. Two weeks now I've been able to go to church without my walker, sit in a pew like a regular human, rise and navigate about under my own steam. Well, mostly. I still use my cane, and choose the pew with a remnant of prayer rail in front, so I can grab the prayer rail to lever myself upright when that is called for. Still, quite an improvement. I've been able to use a regular height kitchen chair to do Coach Nicole's seated videos and get out of it again by myself as well. Haven't dared to risk using one of those for the past several years unless dh is handy, for fear of getting stuck there, but I managed comparatively easily twice this weekend. I'll still have to watch the time still, but it is nice to be able to better utilize my own home.
I have been going down to our local clinic 2 to 4 times a week to use the elliptical trainer. Worked up to 30 or so minutes each time. Follow with 15 to 20 minutes of strength training using 3 lb. dumbbells seated, or doing balance and body resistance exercises using the treadmill sidebars as safety handholds. When our aging and unreliable pool is open, I go there 2ce a week. I swim laps lengthwise, doing the sidestroke up and back the shallow end (flipping sides to keep balanced), "running" one way across the deep end then returning using my body as a boat and rowing. On weekends, when neither pool nor clinic is available, and potentially whenever our weather gets bad enough to keep me in, I do Coach Nicole's videos and use my little 2 lb. dumbbells. I have a 5 lb. set I hope to use eventually, but my elbows are so unstable and my wrists so stiff that they may always to beyond me - they certainly are impossible to control properly now. But the smaller ones help. I'm getting a palpable bicep, and finding lifting and carrying household duties getting easier. I haven't been able to keep up with my 2 mile a week walking goal, because of illness, some nasty weather, and foot problems, but I am getting closer now that my christmas virus is pretty well gone. I'm still looking for better shoes I can wear so I don't aggravate the foot problems again. Anyway, I am pleased to have found a wider variety of exercise forms I can do and am feeling positive results in overall health and general usefulness, main goals of mine. Thank You, Spark and all my Spark friends! God bless us everyone!
