Tracking what I eat

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

When I first actively started using SparkPeople again (a little over a week ago), I wasn't really interested in tracking my food/calories. I thought I was monitoring what I ate well enough on my own. I've tracked my foods before and never really stuck to it. A lot of what I eat is homemade and I told myself that trying to track the calories would be "too inconvenient".

I started actively tracking my food starting Monday morning, and although it's only been a short amount of time, I feel like its made such an impact so far. When I'm preparing my food I find myself much more conscious of serving sizes and how much oil/fat I use when I'm cooking (I never really used to measure). It's eye-opening to really see how many calories you're taking in at each meal/snack. Without tracking, I'd probably never realize when I was over/under where my caloric intake should be. I love being able to see the balance of protein/carbohydrates/fat from my overall reports and I can keep an eye on what categories seem low/high, which really helps with planning the next meal.

If you haven't tried it yet, I encourage you to go for it!

I couldn't agree more!!! I used to track my calories all the time, down to the packet of sugar in my coffee, then I slowly got out of the habit and the pounds started to come back on slowly. I couldn't understand and got frustrated and started to stray away from my healthy lifestyle completely. It wasn't until after Christmas that I got on the scale and realized how out of control it had gotten. I have gone 'back to basics' and have been counting calories and working out 6 days a week. I always plan ahead and budget in for my 'splurge', which is usually my coffee creamer or a snack after workouts. If you plan ahead it saves time, money and calories!!!
I'm glad that you are back on Sparkpeople!! Keep it up!!

I thinking tracking is a huge key for me! I pack my lunch and will track it before I take it....one day I found I packed 800 calories of HEALTHY things....well a few went back in the fridge! I often track BEFORE I eat then remove what I don't eat because I wasn't aware it would be so HIGH! It's saved me from going over my calorie range. Another thing I realized...you can read my blog about "how could I be so blind" about coffee creamer....I forgot to track it....I was using 150+ calories a day and not tracking it....I did the math for it for a year and it was amazing. I'm giving it up now because of what I learned from tracking! or not tracking I should say! :) Kristi

It is definitely harder to track when you're cooking from recipes and ingredients instead of out of a box! It has been worth it so far for me though. It has been eye opening how many fat grams I eat in a day - that is one area I've got to figure out how to scale back on! I'm so glad tracking is working for you; keep at it!
