Cold, rainy Monday

I didn't get out for groceries this morning as I usually do on Monday mornings. We had some freezing rain overnight, and the roads were all ice in my neighborhood. Even if it weren't icy, the weather (it's still raining, though it has warmed up to 41F) has aggravated the pain from my bone mets, so I had to take a pain pill as soon as I got up. They make me light headed and a little sleepy, so I don't drive if I have to take one. Since I have chemo tomorrow, and won't feel good after that, I will have my mom pick up the few things I need when she does her own shopping.

I am taking the day off from exercise too. Even with the pain pill, my shoulder still really hurts, so even yoga is out of the question today. I did work out the last 4 days all in a row, and it really tired out both my shoulders, so I think my body needs a rest for a day anyway. I get a little bummed when I can't add those fitness minutes into Spark, but I know that I have to give myself a break sometimes and not push myself to the point of injury or exhaustion.

Even though it has warmed up a bit, the temps are going to start falling again and we are supposed to get a little snow overnight. We may have some snow flurries tomorrow too. That is ok with me; when it's this cold, I'd rather be out when it's snowing instead of raining.

    That was a good idea to stay in yesterday and to have a break from exercise. Hope all goes well at chemo tomorrow, Shari.

    Hey Shari, Our weather is about the same as yours. It has been a good day to stay at home. Sorry you have had pain today. It is good you listen to your body, and know when to hold off on exercise. I will be thinking of you tomorrow, hope your chemo goes well. ~hugs~ Nancy

    It is normal for our muscles and joints to become a little tired after exercise - especially if we start exercising regularly and our bodies are unused to it. However, any pain at all is not normal and you should stop immediately and rest until healed if this happens.

You are doing such a fantastic job and listening to your body really is important. You are right to rest up to prevent injury. This is why you should rest for at least one day, preferably two in between exercising.

That said, you should still do something on the days in between to keep your body moving and help it to recover. The best options for this are simple walking or a relaxed swim.

You could also do different forms of exercise throughout the week to try and reduce the impact on one particular area of your body.

Say, you do strength training and chair marching on a Monday. On the Tuesday you may want to have a gentle walk or relaxing swim, then on Wednesday perhaps do some yoga. On Thursday you may be able to do your strength training again because you've treated your body gently in between and allowed it to recover. Then perhaps on Friday you might do some more walking or swimming, on Saturday perhaps some more yoga or pilates. Then on Sunday, rest completely.

Varation in your exercise routines is just as important as the exercises themselves
