A Slice of Winter

Friday, January 20, 2012

The feeders were empty this morning and, while I'm not fond of temps in the teens and would have liked it to warm up some before I went outside to fill the feeders, the birdies sat on my window panes outside and stared at me with their beady little eyes and I couldn't take it. I got out there in the freezing cold and it was as bad as I thought it would be. They were so hungry they tried to land on it while I was still trying to fill it. I had cardinals, chickadees, titmice, goldfinches, juncos, purple finches, and woodpeckers on the feeder immediately. At this rate the food won't last long. The feeder was full of birds all day.

I had to go back in and warm up before I could stand going out again. The crows were waiting for me when I went to their feeding spot. I call to them and they call back. I fed them and Baby and then went back inside to warm up again.

The next time I took out the compost and the birds were over there digging food out of the compost bin.

The last time I ventured outside I burned the trash and was glad to get back inside. Too cold.

I put up all the food from Sam's today, did my indoor chores, and started getting the laundry ready for tomorrow.

The phone has not rang for days and it's so nice.

I am so peeved at my computer I could scream. I was trying to shut off a window that was constantly freezing up and it wouldn't let me and I ended up losing some important info. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!

Since the other soap is gone now I've been searching for something to watch on TV without much success. I don't actually watch it but it is on for the noise. In the country it's really quiet and if there is any noise outside it kind of drives me batty. So I ended up watching some real life court TV and it sucked and was so boring I turned it off. I don't know how people can be jurors and stay awake. I found a show about biscuits and ham. Just what I needed. Did I ever mention that biscuits are one of my favorite things? LOL.

At almost the time when my son and hubby got off work the freezing rain arrived. They barely made it home in time. It is icing up and tomorrow I have to do laundry in the pole barn. Ugh!!

So glad your DH and son got home safely. We got the snow and freezing rain but our temps are 67 today instead of 18 like they were Saturday, so it is all melting. All around us they are getting pouring down rain. It's a beautiful day here. AWESOME!!!

You are a godsend to those poor birds! Hang in there through this wild weather, hon. Stay warm!

(I'm sure there must be a good reason why the washer out in the pole barn couldn't be moved indoors, right?)

Nagged by beady-eyed birds. You have a rich life.

I can relate to the cold. It's ice everywhere today - so I've just camped out inside; thank goodness it is Saturday and I did not have to drive to work. I love the part about feeding the birds and how anxious they were. :)

I don't envy you the cold. Shivered just reading it.

I could always tell when the feeders were empty because the chickadees would find me, wherever I was in the house, and peck at the windows. Weird, but cute.

I usually leave on HGTV or DIY or one of those. Sometimes Food Network, although that can be dangerous. :)

I love biscuits too. I recently made a batch of Paula Dean biscuits and they were sooooooo good. I can never make those again because I can eat them all.

We got the freezing rain last night and it continues this morning. I hate it--you can't do anything in it! I feed our birds, too. But if I don't get the feeder filled they just don't show up until I do. ;) Northern VA birds are not very demanding, I guess! GF, you HAVE to get out there and buy that washer/dryer. This pole barn action is NOT good!!!!! Have a warm Saturday!!!

You are such a great animal shepherd ... mmm I can feel the cold from here! Its pouring cold rain here, and its about time -- we've had a totally dry winter. I bet you might like some dry, yes? Congratulations on burning WITHOUT torching mailboxes, or homes or anything else (hee hee ... inside joke). I have to agree about the television - I rarely get to watch it with school and now that I can on break, I have found how dreadful it is! I seriously think it lowered my IQ. Stay warm and dry, friend!

Our birds are funny with the food thing, too. I swear, if the feeder is empty, they sit on the balcony railing and "trash talk" until we fill it.

Its finally going to warm up a bit here after temps below 0F (yes I still remember Imperial measurements after Turdo tried to ram the metric system down everyone's throats). Actually we are somewhat spoiled this winter especially compared to last's but the city STILL can't do a decent job keeping the streets clean.

My goodness, what a day! I love the way you care for all of god's creatures. I hope you get to snuggle down into a nice warm bed and get a good nights sleep and if it is as cold tomorrow as it was today at your house maybe you could postpone your polebarn laundry for another warmer day.

I sure don't envy you having to do your wash in the pole barn. Once, when I lived farther out in the country, my w/d were in an unheated garage. Hated it, plus things were always freezing up. Uggg. Stay warm - my birdies are eat-a-holics too!!!

I enjoy watching the birds wash up in the sprinkler water leftovers on my rock path. There has been little rain, no snow so far, so that's the best I do for my birds. You are so nice. I would love a video of you cawing with the crows. ;0) I moo at cows, and I would like a video of that, too. LOL.

BTW, I keep meaning to tell you that I listened to a Krispan Sullivan blogtalk interview and she mentioned HIGH HIGH HIGH probiotics for treatment of MRSA. They're developing it now.

keep safe and warm. We will have snow here tomorrow, the first significant downfall since the start of the new year.

Btw, crows are really cool. They're extremely bright, as well. I always have loved them.

have a good evening for sure
