going to a dinner party and am nervous...!

Thursday, January 19, 2012

I have been doing so very good at watching what I eat and I have seen the results.

I now am going to a dinner party where I know there will be fabulous foods and wine and plenty of it.

I have cut wheat and sugar out of my diet and am very nervous that I will be put in a position of offending the hostess by not eating.

Does anybody have any advice on how to deal with not coming off as rude by choosing not to eat? I don't want to just push food around my plate since I don't believe in purposely wasting food.

I drink a glass of water to start the meal, then another glass during the meal. That helps me feel full.
Then, if I see it's really necessary to eat to keep the good relationship, I taste it, and it a little. The difficulty with this is that sometimes it triggers my hunger, and I want to eat more. So, I eat first low calorie things, and when I'm well eaten, then I eat a few bites of the calorie heavy stuff.
Otherwise, I also tried to cut out sugar to a minimum, and I remember those times were very depressive weeks. Somehow the lack of sugar had an effect on my mood.
Now, I don't force sugar out, but because I eat so much vegetables, fruits, and non-processed other food, naturally there is very little processed sugar in my diet. Most of the sugar comes from tasty fruits!

I try to take as small a portion as I can of things that look good and that I can eat....and pepper the conversation with compliments to the hosts. That way they know I'm enjoying their food and and are less likely to take offense at anything I do.

I also tell them I'm not eating a lot because I'm saving some room for dessert.....then when dessert comes by, I tell them I'm so stuffed from that delicious meal, that all I can handle is a small, small piece

(In between, and especially before the meal, I drink a lot of water to make sure I don;t overeat)

I once had to go to Thanksgiving and I wasn't able to eat because I had to fast for my blood work and told everyone that I would just take something home... drink water....lots of water and club soda....can't drink before labs either...True story. emoticon

I think if you just explain the situation to the hostess, she will understand. Eat something you can before. If you have specific dietary concerns, they should be understanding.

How much time do you have before the party? A few days? Can you let the hostess know in advance that you can't eat wheat and sugar? Those seem like genuine health concerns that a hostess would take into account - I mean, what if she had someone there who is diabetic or needs to be on a gluten-free diet?
