Late Night Pancake House Meal?

Monday, January 09, 2012

Walking down the hall at work today, I overheard a snippet of a conversation. Two ladies were talking about their weekend and one of them mentioned going to the pancake house to eat.

Instantly, I wanted a stack of golden pancakes, covered with syrup, maybe a little whipped cream and some fruit to top it off. Not that strange, right?

Except I don't like pancakes. I'm not a bread/carb person anyway and pancakes fall into that category for me. The only way I can eat them is to pour so much syrup on them all I can taste is the syrup. THEN, I'm sick to my stomach, literally, because I ate too much sugar.

So why did I want pancakes? Maybe I just wanted the camaraderie that the statement implied? Even now, I'm craving pancakes! What the heck!

Anyway, I guess that's what I get for eavesdropping! LOL!

Just read this blog. It brought back a good memory for me. When I was in sixth grade our school district had an environmental education program where we spent a week at a State Park ~ in the woods. One thing I really remember is that one breakfast we had pancake day. The goal was to see who could eat the most pancakes. I was a skinny kid at the time but could really eat! I remember I finished in the top five in the contest.

Talking about syrup brings me to my favorite breakfast ~ French Toast. I loved it as a kid (still do on occasion) with overthrowing amounts of Aunt Jemima syrup and melted butter. And ooh that also brings up Eggo waffles too! Loved when Mom had those for us for breakfast instead of cold cereal and milk!

Many of us are just suggestible! I eat pancakes once a year - can take them or leave them - but the BUTTER that melts on them and makes them rich and sweet and lovely - now THAT'S what I'm craving! We talk about food a lot in my office too - I love it, though. I have a huge cookbook collection, watch the Cooking Channel and the Food Network every chance that I get - I just love food and I love cooking all kinds of things. I have had to learn to have a new relationship with food but that's been a fun challenge (most days)!

Nah, you wanted pancakes. There is some deep-seeded memory , or else a very good television commercial, that brings a powerful message to mind. Pancakes do have an awfully good aroma....I can smell them now....

Love pancakes. Usually make my own, but not very often. (I'm a lazy cook.)
    Don't like syrup though

I am very suggestive about food, too. If I am reading a book, and the characters eat, it makes me hungry. If they have tea, I'll want tea also. Fortunately I am gluten intolerant so pancakes don't tempt me at all.

I, too, find myself craving things that I wouldn't normally eat. I believe, sometimes, that mentally and emotionally we are still in the "dieting" phase of our lives. That residual causes us to act crazy. LOL

Even though our minds tell us that we are making a lifestyle change. There is a large part of us that still looks at this change as being some sort of denial.

With me it's French toast. LOL
