I have read and heard that it takes about 30 days for habits to form. Frankly, I just do not believe this. Or maybe I am not the norm. I can work at something for 30 days and it simply does not become a habit that easily. I've been thinking about this of late because I have reflected on my first year on Spark when I was blogging every day for 365 days.. never missed a day. I had streaks for breakfast, water, snacks, etc. I had streaks for logging my foods. And it DID feel like habits were forming.
In 30 days though? Hardly.
Over the 30 days things did happen:
I began thinking more about the choices I was making.
I began planning for the choices I was making.
I woke up thinking about the choices I was making.
I began to forget what life was like with my old habits.
I began filling in with new ideas and thoughts.
I began adjusting to the new choices and some began to just be more "normal" parts of my life.
HOWEVER... As soon as I seemed to relax, my "old" habits seemed to wiggle themselves right back into my life. Old thoughts like "oh, I can eat later" or "I just can't fit that glass of water in right now." or "I am too tired to do my sit-ups now" ...
Yes, I know those old habits took long years to form. But how interesting it is that those habits did not need much nurturing while my "new" habits take an attention that my old habits do not seem to need at all.
So... I think that this "30" day thing is really not fact but a fantasy. I'm sure there is lots of research not to back me up, but looking inwards at my own life, it is going to take a whole heck of a lot longer to form AND KEEP new habits than a mere 30 days... 12 months or even longer. Or perhaps I just need to change my own definition of what a "habit" is.
I frankly think my habits have ADHD!
