Who are you people?

Thursday, January 05, 2012

Okay, what's up with you people? I get sick for a week and I have people sending me emails, visiting my spark page, dropping off gifts, and adding comments to all my "woe is me" updates.

My own parents didn't even phone to ask how I was feeling. I will give them a break, they are 86. Not that I expected it but none of my brothers checked in on me, not even my sister. On the other hand, my wife and daughters did take care of me during this ugly bout with the flu.

But it is you people who amaze me. We have never met, but we do share a common goal of a healthy active life. We have never chatted on the phone, had coffee, tea, or even a beer together but again you guys are there. We haven't gone out for a walk, a run, or bike ride together but still you check up on me to make sure I am doing mine. The ongoing sense of community, the caring, the concern, you all demonstrate time and time again, never ceases to impress.

I would like to say thanks to all of you for the support you have given me, not only this last week, but through all the time I have been on Spark people. I would love to name each of you but I am afraid I would miss someone. One of my resolutions is to live healthier and I will blog about that later. But another resolution is to spend time and acknowledge the important people in my life. I may not be able to spend "real" time with you all but please, with this blog, consider yourself acknowledged because "you do make a difference."

Happy New Year and tomorrow, now that this flu is retreating, I will be getting in my first fitness minutes of 2012.

Andy i for myself have been out of pocket myself but i will agree that there is bond with each of us here on this website i may not chat for a while but trust me someone missed me here and will contact me to put a smile on my face to know that someone cared and that one is someone i have never met face to face like family, friends or co-workers that are seen on a regular routine. But you put down your goal mine is to get motivated and get the ball rolling on my weight loss. So Andy i wish you well on yours

Julie

I think sometimes unreal friends are more supportive than real friends because we can be... It takes one minute to send a goodie. :-) We definitely have our place though! Glad you're feeling better!

    Andy,

First, I want to say that I was so impressed with YOU when you sent a nice hello message when we were placed on the same 5% Challenge team. I have my setting on private but you still took the time and initiative to extend your warm greetings. Wow.

So, who are we?

I'll speak for myself. I am someone who desires to see others be the best they can be. I am loyal. I am willing to self-sacrifice for the good of all. I encourage because I know one day I will need encouragement. I am not afraid to say the hard things when necessary and to the benefit of another - but only spoken truthfully in love, not condemnation. I am the beneficiary of kindness given and the least I can do is reciprocate or initiate that kindness to another.

SparkPeople is an amazing group of people. We are all so blessed by this community and all that it provides and gives and what we can contribute and share.

I wish you the very best in this upcoming New Year Andy. We are all in this together and it is a privilege to be on the same Shooting Stars team with you!

Andy, you are always there when we need a push or a hug. Glad you are feeling better! I think many of us knew you were back with a vengeance and on a good path of health and fitness, and we didn't want this bug to de-rail your motivation!
Great blog, you are right, it's the people here at Spark that are why so many of us find success in our goals. I couldn't do it alone, my spark friends mean so much to me!

You know, of course, that brothers and sisters are considered "extended" family, and in my own humble opinion that kind of extension can, by its own nature, result in a certain amount of detachment and distance in attitude and treatment, especially when one reaches adulthood and starts their own immediate family unit......

What's up with us Sparkers, you say? Well, I think you may have an idea now......there are plenty of folks beside yourself that are searching for that sense of community and belonging that, for whatever reasons, family may not be able to provide....

Best wishes for your journey to better health in this new year!
