After running 8+ miles today (with some hamstring pain...which I hope is 'nothing' but I'll discuss with my physical therapist tomorrow), I went to my first Masters Swim Class!!!! This is HUGE as I've only swam twice since my two sprint triathlons (in April & May last year) and I've NOT wanted to get back in the water. Last year, I did all the training on my own! Oh, and I had a one time per week, 30- minute 'class' that was really more of a group swim - not a lesson.
Anyway, I was NERVOUS!!!
I got there about 10 minutes early and some people were already swimming. Others were standing around. I wasn't sure what to do or which one was the instructor. I finally saw her come in with her official YMCA badge and went and introduced myself. She asked me my basic background. Then, she told me that they had a meet that weekend so workout would be different today. Usually, they focus more on correct form, etc, but today she was having them do some relays and starts. But, there were 7 of us who weren't competing so we got lanes 1 & 2.
I was with 3 other ladies and we were in Lane 1. They were really friendly and we started talking. One of them had done the same sprint tri that I'd done in May and another was interested in doing her first this year! So, they were excited to talk to me.
We started swimming, and the instructor stopped me & told me I looked pretty good (hmmm....not sure about that!) but gave me 2 things to work on. Later, she stopped & gave me 3 more. Yikes!!! It's really a little too much to focus on all at once, but she said she could see improvements. And, next week, when we get to do more drills, I bet it'll be easier to focus on one change at a time.
We swam for an hour and I smell like pool water now!
After my long run, this really made me tired. But, it also helped work out some of the kinks!
The class meets Tuesdays & Thursdays, so I have tomorrow off. Oh, and I was pleasantly surprised with the water temperature! I thought it felt really great, though others were complaining of it being too cold.
If you are considering joining a Masters Swim Class, but are scared like I was, I suggest you give it a try! If it was anything like my experience, you'll love it! And, I'm so excited to have others to TRAIN WITH!!! WooHoo!!!!
