Wow, what an incredible experience! So much happened and I learned so much! I am going to try and record my experiences.
When we arrived at the airport in Port-au-Prince, we were 1 1/2 hours late. We got through customs fine and then we entered the shock of our lives! A crowded room full of people speaking mostly Creole and pushing and shoving to get their luggage. 4 hours later we finally got our luggage, and with help were able to get our 4 large bags and 2 smaller ones out to our ride. Thankfully she was still there as she had heard about the chaos inside. We found out then that there had been 5 planes land at the same time and it was one of the busiest days at the airport.
This is a picture that Karen took (the lady in charge of Coram Deo) of the traffic trying to get to the airport.
Here are some pics of where we stayed:
Here is a pic of one of the classrooms- outside:
This is a pic of the teachers that we worked with:
This is a pic of our wonderful interpreters and my husband:
The streets are crazy to drive on - they are very bumpy (broken pavement, pot holes etc) with debris everywhere still from the earthquake, and people don't really seem to follow any driving rules :)
Their public transport system are called tap-taps. Here is a pic:
They are usually very colorful- works of art themselves- and the people crowd on to them.
Everyone that we met was so wonderful and so grateful to have us there! I would go back in a second! NO one cared what I looked like. Oh and I LOST 6lbs!!
Anyway, that is all I will post for now. More to come later!
