Midnight Walk to "walk in" the New Year

Monday, January 02, 2012

We gathered at St. Joseph's Hall in Fredericksburg at 11pm and visited until the bells started ringing to indicate the new year had arrived. Then we all headed out on the trail to "walk in" 2012. Fredericksburg still had lots of Christmas lights to enjoy on this chilly (but not cold) night that ended 2011. Our first good light display was this park pavilion.

This is my DH and a lady from SA headed out on the walk.

These are just some walkers ahead of us on the route.

This is Admiral Nimitz Museum nicely lighted for Christmas.

This is a German Christmas Pyramid in the Marktplatz.

We had a great walk and a good time socializing with other walkers.

What a beautiful idea, and a wonderful alternative to participating in the usual celebrations (or sitting at home watching other people celebrate on TV). I used to go outside at around 11:50 and walk in the new year in my neighborhood. It was always great, because the streets were so quiet, and right at 12:00 you could hear everyone cheering in their houses. Sometimes young people would come out and whoop it up or bang on pots and pans, set off firecrackers, etc.
Thanks for sharing the idea and pix!
Laurie
