Christmas with my Mom

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

On Christmas Day morning I went to visit my Mom in her special care home. When I got there she had just finished having her breakfast. The staff took her to the living room and she settled into a nice comfy chair by her favourite picture window. She was able to use her walker. Some days she has to be in a wheel chair.

I gave her a black and white plushy panda bear which she absolutely loved. Not only does she have dementia, she also has macular degeneration in her eyes and can't see except peripherally. We played with the bear (she loves bears) and it made her laugh (which made me laugh).

At noon, we had Christmas dinner in the kitchen. All 10 residents, the 3 staff and 2 guests (including me) enjoyed it very much. One of the resident's sons brought in the entire, catered dinner from our largest hotel. God Bless him, he does so much for all the residents there. He owns several businesses and is very well-to-do.

The dinner was awesome. We had turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, all sorts of veggies and for desert we had chocolate cheesecake. I must have put on all the weight I lost this fall - haha.

After dinner we went back to the living room and had a nice visit. I stayed for about another hour. The staff and the residents were going to sing Christmas songs later in the afternoon.

It took awhile when I first saw Mom that day for her to grasp who I was but all in all the day turned out wonderfully well. I feel so blessed that I was able to spend yet another Christmas with my Mom.

As I always say, please always take the time to hug your loved ones. It is the best thing you can ever do.

God Bless you all and have a Happy New Year!

Bob.

That's wonderful that you had such a good Christmas with your Mum. (I still miss my Mum terribly). What a wonderful home she is in and such a kind, generous man. Glad you dined well.
My Mum loved cuddly animals too. Her favourite were deer, she loved Bambi and Thumper which I bought in Florida for her. I also got a big polar bear for her. Every good wish to her and you for the year ahead. God Bless.

    Bob,
I am happy for you that you and your Mom could spend Christmas day together. Like your Mom, my Mom received a stuffed animal for Christmas that Mom was very happy with. I am glad that your Mom was able to use the walker today. Seeing her strong enough to use the walker was a gift in itself to you. I am glad you could enjoy Christmas dinner with your Mom. I am sure you will get rid of any pounds you gained, quickly. It was nice that someone cared enough for all of you to have an excellent Christmas dinner. Best wishes for you and your Mom that you receive the gift of more Christmas days together.

For your Mom many emoticon

Loved your blog. It is what Christmas is all about. I'm so glad you got to spend some quality time with your mother. And bless the man who provided such a nice meal. He knows how to make the most of the blessings he has had bestowed upon him.

Bob what a wonderful thing. You could spend time with your mom and make her happy as well as you were happy also.
My husband had dementia and I know what it is like. I'm so sorry for those who have to go through it. People say they don't know but my husband did and was very unhappy. When he did go home to be with the Lord I was happy for him. Of course I missed him but would never call him back again.
God bless you Bob. You are a good son and one meal won't make you gain back the 40 pounds. Take care of yourself. I gained a lot of weight when my husband was in the n/h as I didn't take care of me as I was still taking care of him as much as I could.
Sorry this is so long.
Irene

Bob it sounds like such a wonderful time and I am so happy for you that you got to share it with your Mom. The dinner does sound fantastic and I am so glad she liked the panda bear. Nothing can compete with a smile from a loved one when they receive the gift you've selected for them.

God bless you too Bob and I hope you are blessed beyond measure in 2012!

Awwwww, so very glad that you had such a wonderful Christmas with your Mom. You know, it's so very hard to see our parents get to a point where they cannot take care of themselves. But it sounds like your Mom is in a good place and happy.

Wishing you a happy, blessed, healthy, SPARKING New Year.
