12 for 2012

Thursday, December 22, 2011

I first heard of the Irongirl Triathlon from a fellow "boot camper" back in 2009. The event was already sold out, but I vowed that I would enter the following year. Triathlon, hmmm, that's swimming, biking and running, ALL in the same day right??? I talked myself out of and I'm ashamed to admit that my first race was a DNS (did not start).

So, 2011, new year, new resolution: FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED!!!!. This is a major lifestyle change for a born procrastinator, such as myself. I forgot to mention that I do not LOVE exercise, but ...finish what you started.

Challenges: staying the course, and over coming "runner's rage". Confession #1: I used to HATE running to the point that, in between gasps for air and prayer, I uttered some not so nice words...

Things I should have done differently : I wish I would have had a coach, especially a swim coach. I probably should not made a triathlon my first race EVER !. When I say ever I mean : I never participated in any athletic event in my life, including and since high school. Probably done this a little earlier in life...Although I believe it's never to late to start something new, I could have had a much better advantage if I started this at 29 versus 49. Chalk it up to being a late bloomer???

What I gained: A new wardrobe (went from a 12 to a six) ...diet and exercise was not my main concern. The focus was not to die of embarrassment or a heart attack. Oh, and for anyone reading this who is not at their goal weight: I am 5'2 ", at my "fluffiest" , I was 242 pounds. I know how hard it is to get going, but that's a whole other story.

Irongirl was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. I didn't finish first or last, but I did finish. Since then: I ran two 5K's, a 10K, a 15K and, believe it or not, a half marathon.

My goal for 2012? Twelve for 12: I'm already signed up for a 8k, two half marathons (as "the runner's": cuz I'm only HALF crazy), a 10 mile, a 10k and of course Irongirl 2012. Training for all of that plus the races I haven't yet had to opportunity to sign up for should satisfy my spark point goal...

That's great! I started doing triathlons last year and it is amazing how personally rewarding it is to cross the finish line.

What a wonderful, inspirational story. Thank you so much for sharing, especially the fact that you were once a fluffy...

BEST to you on your 2012 goals. I have a very strong suspicion that you're a lock to meet them all.
