Haunted Hustle. This was the next step in our Running Road Trips. Des Moines was the first in that we had to navigate an unfamiliar city without our trusted driver. BUT we did fine (and I CAN read a map! LOL) This is something WAY out of my comfort zone. I am rather shy around people that I don’t know. I mean this was a bus full of people (besides Laurie) that I had never met before! One thing I learned from this bus trip is that old people are crazy. LOL (I was easily the youngest one on the bus) AND Runners are INSANE!! We had a LOT of fun, and had a lot of laughs and won some money. We placed $2 on our finish time predictions and Laurie won the pot. I got my $ back, so I was happy. Middleton was a cute little place. We go to the hotel and went to the Expo to pick up our packets and Elsa’s (ROOT4HOME) while we were there. Then we headed out to take a walk to the local running store to have a video evaluation and fitting. My video was UGLY!!! My left ankle seemed to fold in 90 degrees! The Running Fairy bought me some new shoes (!) and, AND, they are PINK!!! Yay! We got a little rain and a little (not so much) rainbow. Since we were trying to be frugal, we brought lots of food with us so we just ate in our room. There was a bit of a tussle over the thermostat, but I have that everywhere because I am ALWAYS cold.
Morning came sooner than I was ready. I won’t lie it was a little chilly, BUT this was my first race as a Half Fanatic, and my new warmers had come just in time. They were wonderful! Laurie and I made breakfast in our room. One big challenge for me was my Pre-Race breakfast of oatmeal, bananas and walnuts. I always have it, it gets me through with no tummy problems and its yummy! But I didn’t know how to cook it. Laurie had the awesome idea of just heating up water with the coffee maker! So simple and it worked like a charm!!I didn’t know Elsa found our room and we passed off her packet and we all walked to the start area to meet up with Christina (PHDMAMA06). All I have to say is thank goodness for gear check cuz I wore pants, a sweatshirt,& extra gloves on the walk, and it was nice to have them after the finish! We met up with Christina, and after some chatting we lined up. It was crowded for the Half start, but there was also a lot of body heat. It was fun to look at all the costumes. The route was nice. I really enjoyed it. A nice number of inclines. I like hills. Beautiful Wisconsin Fall scenery to look at. Laurie wanted to stick with her Pace Team to ensure her gambling win, but I wanted to RUN. Laurie, Christina and I stayed together for the first part of it, but I left them to their Pace Team and pulled ahead. It was a beautiful day. I had a pretty ok finish. It wasn’t what I wanted but I have learned that time isn’t a factor for me. I don’t really care what my finish is as long as I get there! LOL I hung out at the finish for Laurie and Christina to cross. We got our pictures taken, and headed over to the beer. They had some from a local brewery and I really wanted to try the dark. As we got to the front of the line, they ran out of the dark. I literally got the VERY LAST BEER. Laurie was devastated! I knew she wanted, and would enjoy it more than I would, so I gave her my beer. It was the least I could do for my Running Fairy!! We got a plate of food (TGI Fridays furnished the food) and sat with Elsa and watched a few of the Marathoner begin to trickle into the finish. The costumes were a lot of fun! One of the runners from our group actually won the costume contest! It was a Haunted House! I posted a picture of it! We stopped at Starbucks on the way back to the hotel. I needed some coffee to warm up, and I figured I had earned it. MMMMMMM.... Pumpkin Spice Latte (skim milk, no whip) Oh, excuse me, I was reliving it. I don't have Starbucks often so it was truly a treat for me. We headed back, said our good byes to Elsa (Christina left shortly after the finish because she had an appointment to make it home for) and went up to get showered for the Post Race Party with the running club. I have chosen not to post any of those pictures. Well, a couple. It was fun. There was a lot of alcohol, though I didn’t partake (not a big drinker), and a lot of laughs. Then a group of us decided to go grab some food at an Irish Pub that wasn’t too far from the hotel. GREAT FOOD!!! I did have a Guiness. When in Rome, you know. We headed home the next morning. Got home in time to take Hayden trick or treating!
OH! I almost forgot! I had left my lights on while we were waiting to depart on the bus, so Laurie had to call Jim and have him meet us at Tri-State Travel to jump my car!!! LOL Oh well. I am sure I am forgetting some stuff, but it HAS been almost 2 months since this trip!
Laurie is trying to run me off the road.
