National Mitten Tree Day

Tuesday, December 06, 2011

December 6 is National Mitten Tree Day. Our church usually puts up a Mitten Tree, and the congregation brings warm mittens, gloves, scarves, and even toddler coats to hang on the tree. These are gathered up sent to a Navajo Reservation. What does your place of fellowship do? ( The Mitten Tree is custom that may have begun with the sweet story of "The Mitten Tree" by Candace Christiansen. In the sotry, Sarah saw a child with no mittens so she knit him a pair and left them on an evergreen tree, and when he took them, she knit more and other children came to get them. Someone left her a basket of yarn, and she kept knitting mittens and putting them on the tree.)

I love that story. We did a curriculum to it one year at school. I also tried to get a mitten/sock tree going at church, but it did not get a lot of attention.
