Giving in to Chocolate & Peppermint

Thursday, December 01, 2011

I willingly admit to having issues with chocolate and peppermint. Issues like I don't think I've ever met any concoction made with those two that I didn't like. So as I was leaving a shopping center parking lot and saw a strategically placed banner for Chocolate Peppermint Milk Shakes available at the corner Burgerville, somehow the mini-van turned right into that Burgerville lot.

I went in literally complaining outloud about how the darned Chocolate Peppermint milkshake was going to play havoc with today's calorie count.

Apparently if you just let people know, sometimes they're more than willing to help. The nice man at the counter offered me an alternative of their Chocolate Peppermint smoothie. He guaranteed I'd like it just as well or he'd trade me right on the spot for a milkshake.

Oooh, baby. With little flecks of peppermint candy blended in, it was heaven in a cup. A very small cup. I have a tiny bit of discipline. And the counter guy was so pleased with himself by the time I was ready to walk out the door, he'd calculated the calories and fat grams I'd saved: because the smoothies are made with fat-free yogurt, over 30 grams of fat and over 400 calories.

Lesson learned:
it will never hurt to ask if there are lower calorie options available.

Lower calorie options are the way to go!
I noticed that skimming down a few calories here and there during the day, comes back with some important "savings" on calories.

How did you know?! Dark Chocolate & Peppermint ice cream are December's treats.
(Unfortunately I can be tempted w/ dark chocolate most any time.)

That's cool that you were able to enjoy a treat for a better-for-you deal!

I figured out about a year ago that Burgerville smoothies are much less of a hit on the calories/fat budget than the shakes and taste every bit as good (actually I like them better). I wish you hadn't told me that they were offering chocolate peppermint flavor though, now I'll be obsessing about them all day.

By the way Starbucks is offering a similar product (coffee rather than shake). I see the banner every time I walk into the Albertson's in Battle Ground. I'm so glad I don't drink coffee!

I'm with you. The combination is soooo good - especially when it's the peppermint bark. I will make an allowance for a little of it as a special treat during the holidays/

Chocolate and peppermint--irresistible! Glad they had a lower cal option. Now we just need to find a tasty eggnog substitute. Don't read the calories on the label. I think just reading it piles on the pounds! emoticon
