Turkey Day at the In-Laws!

Friday, November 25, 2011

The food choices here at the in-laws are awful. Basically the only healthy thing to eat was the turkey. I'm not that fond of turkey, but had a very small sliver. They had stuffing, sweet glazed ham, two types of taters (one with bacon YUM! and one with lots of butter), canned corn and canned green beans both cooked with bacon fat, oily sweet slaw and mac and cheese shells. Oh, oh, oh, don't forget the 5 containers of crescent rolls.

They had pumpkin pie (I don't eat it), 4 layer dessert (pudding, whip cream, nuts and chocolate chips), my friend sent us with a cream cheese pumpkin pie and then my sister in-law made a dessert with grapes, sour cream, cream cheese and sugar and then nuts, butter and brown sugar on top. It was amazing and irresistible. I ate plenty of the bacon mashed potatoes, ham and the grape dish.

We went shopping about 10pm to about 5:30am. It was nuts. Old Navy was the craziest. The line to get in was pretty long then while we stood in line to check out they were closing the gait to keep others out. Wild. We got some good deals. My daughter and I both got pecoats (sp) and nice scarves for about $21 for the coats and $1 for the scarves. We got my son a pull over sweater, too. We got to a store called Menards and saw my hubby's sister in line. We saw the store's lights kick on and thought they were opening up. We asked her when they opened (it was 5am) and she said 6am. We looked at her with a crazy look and said we were headed home to sleep. I can't believe she had been up all night and then was planning on standing in line for another HOUR to shop more!! We are soooo, tired. Slept about 3 3/4 hrs. Hubby got up with the arguing kids and let me sleep 20 min. more than he did. I am a light sleeper so I knew it just wouldn't work. It was a nice gesture on his part, though.

We got a movie or two, a cd, an x box game, some pjs for me and two shirts for my son. I wanted some jeans from Kohls, but when I tried them on they didn't seem the correct size. I have a pair at home that seem fine. I am 5' 2", so it's difficult to find good fitting jeans. I shopped in the Jr. section at Kohls.

I think we will be heading out tomorrow for some more deals. Eating at home should be much better. I really wish they would eat better here. It's a shame since my MIL lost 100 lbs once with Weight Watchers, but hasn't been able to keep it off. She didn't exercise and would eat pickles like they were going out of style because they were free, totally neglecting the nutritional aspects of the losing weight part. Fat Free dressings and ice berg lettuce are available, but no other veggies unless they are in cans.

It will be good to be home! I am grateful that we are able to get together. They pull it all together so easily and do it year after year. I love that. To them, family is family. Close. My family could go a month and not call each other. Sad.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and can find something to be grateful for this weekend.

Mel, it's great that he's got a good family, but I know it's hard to see so many poor food choices being made! That's the one thing I don't like about weight watchers -- the points make it all seem like a game. Knowing the actual nutritional value of food and not just the "points" value makes such a difference and helps you make healthier choices, I think.

At least now you can appreciate the healthy food you're used to eating!

Congrats on all the deals! I did some online shopping and that was about it for me. :)

Wow, what a day you had! Glad you were able to spend time with family. I'm not a Black Friday shopper, so opted out of that. I got in a great 90 min. walk on a trail I had never been on before, and loved it. I went with my sister-in-law and my niece. There were lots of people out riding bikes and walking today. Great to see that. Gotta love 68 degrees on Nov. 25!

Have a nice, healthy weekend!
