I have been thinking a lot about exercise lately. Mostly because I am so out of shape that there are few things I can do for any length of time. I can go for a 30 minute walk...no sweat. Literally, no sweat. That isn't doing me much good. Okay, jogging at this point is totally out so I pick up the pace and do 30 minutes of speed walking. In case you don't know exactly what that is, you take little, tiny steps really, really fast. All the kids point and laugh at you cuz you are walking funny.
That is when it hit me. KIDS! I remember being one a long, long time ago. I don't know about kids now-a-days what with computers and the obstacle course that is urban/suburban life but, when I was a kid in the country, I was outside all the time. If I wasn't, my mom would find all kinds of chores for me to do. Most of the time she didn't even know where I was. The rule was, be home for supper. I was always out with my brothers and sister and one or two very smart dogs so if someone got into trouble, someone else could always go for help. I don't recall that ever happening. Anyway, we were always busy and you know what we were doing...you got it, EXERCISING!!! OMG! There it is! If you want to get back in shape all you have to do is PLAY.
So I went out in my backyard and drew up a couple different hopscotch grids I use to play on the school yard and lo and behold, a NEW exercise! I have been having a ball doing this. Rain or shine, I am out there at least two days a week, hopping around on one leg or the other. (Have to give them equal time). If you think about all the different things that hopscotch does for you, it is pretty cool. Balance and coordination are right at the top. If you play the whole game, you get in some really good cardio not to mention the strength it takes to bend down to pick up a rock on one leg using good body mechanics or hop around on one leg for 3-5 mins at a time.
When we grow up we put our kid selves on a time out. We get down to grown up business and grown up play that is not always healthy. Basically, if you are having "fun" as an adult, what you are doing probably isn't good for you or it isn't very safe. There is a wealth of fun exercise in our pasts. Time for me to jump, skip, sprint, climb, explore and just have some fun.
