You can call me "Gym"

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Okay...big step...I set foot in a gym for the first time ever.

The membership I won in a raffle...6 free months at the fitness center. Some sort of sign, I guess....either that or I was the only raffle ticket purchaser for that particular prize, as I won handily.

I did not plan on going in there today. Its 24 hour access, so I planned my first trip to be Thanksgiving morning, prior to our guests arriving...I figured the place would be deserted and there would be nobody there to witness my obvious lack of knowledge. But, I got a call from a friend, whose son was in town for the holiday and had a free pass to the same gym....he was gym-experienced so I met him and his brother this morning.

A very good experience. A little rocky at first, as I wanted to learn something about the various machines, and they seemed to be free-weighters. We all eventually switched to the machines and I was able to sample quite a few of them. After initial trepidation, I was confident enough to remain after they had to leave. Alone with strangers in the gym (the horror) :)

Anyway...I guess the point to this blog is: If you have gym-anxiety (such as me), jump out of your comfort zone...it only takes a few minutes to blend in. Find a gym buddy, if possible, at least for a first visit...or try to get a staff meeber to help you out....it is worth the plunge, I think.

I feel better!

I'm so glad you finally went and that it went so well. It is always better that you go with friends it makes it less scary and helps the time pass. I'm glad you liked it so well. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

I agree...jump out of your comfort zone!!! I had to go to my first gym visit alone and I did it! Once I got there, I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My DH finally joined 3 months later and now goes with me frequently.
