Great progress in swimming. update....

Monday, November 21, 2011

I purchased the Total Immersion DVD by Terry Laughlin and I will say that it was money well spent. After spending alot of time basically fighting the water and flailing my way though as many laps and my poor waterlogged soul could tolerate, I finally have had my very first, great swim session, where I walked away feeling like I actually have a chance to train to the point that i would be good enough in the swim to do a triathlon. I haven't been seriously swimming since I was probably 6th grade....I'm 42 now...

It was an amazing feeling to feel like I was working with the water and being one with it instead of fighting it. Being alot more at home on land, the swim is really tough for me and I suspect for most of us since we dont spend much time in the water.

Here is a link to the Total Immersion site.

My plan is to learn as much as I can and practice at the local Y, then hit the open water come early summer.

Today's workout was fantastic.

1 hr swimming, mostly the crawl and working on my form.
30 min on the bike
30 min run/walk.

I worked up a great sweat but best of all was the feeling like I really made some progress in the swim.

Great journeys are undertaken one small step at a time.

You did your own triathlon today! The total immersion DVD is great. I would love to go to one of their training courses sometime.

It's like magic, right? I love TI, the "balance point" training was a revelation! Awesome job!

This is very interesting, thanks Robert!
I haven't tried to work on swimming for ages, I was so bad at it as a kid, always afraid to breathe in water...but I have thought that one of these days I would get back to it.
We'll see - right now I can't afford a gym that has a pool...
Hurrah for you! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Great job on the swimming. This is something I have been working on for over a year. I think it's the hardest thing I've ever done. 3 of the 4 that I run with don't know how to swim. We have signed up for swim lesseson at the Y in January. Checked out the website, may have to order some. It looks like really good, helpful instruction.

Sounds like you are hitting the water, running - or running the water, swimming - or... you know what I mean. Great work!

Fantastic! I am eagerly reading about your progress as I hope to one day do a triathalon as well! I like that you felt at one with the water- its so elemental, yet we forget how wonderful it is to immerse ourselves! Way to go on a fabulous work out too:) emoticon emoticon

I haven't heard of before. I have a coworker who is scared to death of the water because of something that happened to her when she was a child. I can share this with her. Very helpful. You are emoticon

I'm so happy to hear that the Total Immersion is working out for you! It has really helped my husband immensely ~ and that is his weak area to work on as well. He feels much better about his performance, and even stated that he had totally forgotten how much he loved swimming from his earlier years.

Cheers to being one with the water! That is AWESOME!!
