I went to meet my new doctor yesterday since my current doctor is retiring at the end of December. While I was there and as part of my new patient exam we went over some labs I had drawn on November 1st that I had not yet covered with the previous doctor.
A year ago I had some blood work done to check my CBC's and cholesterol. Being morbidly obese this was pretty important thing to know. I was surprised to find out that my cholesterol was pretty much normal. MY LDL (bad cholesterol) fell into the optimal range and my HDL was a little low, but close to normal. What I found out that was shocking was my triglyceride level was 559mg/dL the normal ranges for triglycerides are 30-150 mg/dL, which classified myself as very high. I was at severe risk of heart disease, stroke or a heart attack. High triglycerides cause a hardening or thickening of the arteries.
I went on some medications, adjusted my diet and lost 17 pounds in two months, and then I went back to my normal way of life. And then in July I lost my mother and in one of our final conversations I made her a promise to get healthy and loose weight. On August 31, 2011 I found sparkpeople and it has changed my life forever! No more crazy fad/starvation diets...no diets at all in fact!!! Just a healthy life style and some tools that I will use for the rest of my life!
Today I am 40 pounds lighter. I feel wonderful and I love awakening the skinny person slumbering within my body! She is slowly emerging and she is a happy girl. I go to my gym five days a week and my kids are also actively using the the gym as well! My new lab reports showed my triglycerides at 194 mg/dL....so close to that normal range! I would suspect that in another 4 months it should be right where it should be and who knows how many more pounds I will have dropped. I still have 108 pounds to loose, but for the first time in my life I am confident that I will reach and maintain my goal!
Thank you Sparkpeople and all my SP buddies and team members for your help and support! I love living life now instead of watching it go by from the couch!
