Anyone have Vitamin D experiences to share?

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Just had some bloodwork done. Doctor had vitamin levels tested. I was surprised to find I'm deficient in Vitamin D, as I've been taking 1000mg daily for months as part of a Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D3 supplement to help heal up my shoulder issues. It has definitely seemed to help the muscle issues, not so much the deficiency.

As usual with health-related subjects, all sorts of pros and cons and conflicting info is out there.

For instance, the dietician I saw said 1000mg was "way too much".

Doctor just told me to start taking 1000mg a day.

Father (who is drastically deficient) says 1000mg is "way too much".

Online research and forum reading indicates that to boost levels, something like 5000 + is optimum, with retesting every six months or so.

This whole Vit D thing is just weird. I drink at least two servings of Vit D fortified milk a day, eat healthily, and live in Australia and get sun for half an hour at least most days. Now, from what I read today, in order to make Vit D, you need daily near-nekkid exposure almost to the point of burn for the benefit. Ummm...no.

So have any of you had any experiences you can share? Did you find that higher doses of Vit D boost your energy levels? Any weird side effects? Any good old wives' tales?

I don't think I have ever been tested - unless it's standard in a medical blood test. Anyway, my doctor hasn't mentioned it. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say here too. I, like you, drink my milk and get outdoors during the spring, summer & fall months. Winter is tougher. I do get 800 UI's in my multi-vitamin - hope that is helping.

I found out I have Vit D definancy and taking medication - one pill a week. I'm supposed to see the dr this month for another blood test, so I'm hoping it will be back to normal. I try to be outside while it's sunny as much as I can. I found that has helped me a lot.

I just completed my regular bloodwork and have the results. Previously, I was Vit D deficient. I was just getting 800 mg in my calcium tabs and my doctor told me to take another 1000 mg of D3 daily. My recent results show that I am no longer deficient. I can't say if it has had any effect on me, because I have made so many other changes over the last 9 months (eating healthier, losing weight, exercising.) However, ALL my lab results are now normal/good and I was able to stop taking my only prescription medicine for hypertension. I cannot expose myself to sunlight due to previous sun damage (fair complexion) and radiation therapy, so I am not getting any D from sunlight.

Sorry cannot help as mine is fine but you do seem to be putting the effort in to getting it correct.
