Comfort Food for Dinner Tonight: Old-Time Beef Stew

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

I am cooking a pot of Beef Stew for dinner tonight. Very simple to toss together and smells wonderful already. The recipe is one of Paula Deen's recipes.

Healthy Comfort Food!

Here's the recipe...

Old-Time Beef Stew Recipe

2 pounds stew beef
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 medium onion, sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
3 large carrots, sliced
3 ribs celery, chopped
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Brown meat in hot oil. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove. Add carrots and celery. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth. Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.

*** I browned the meat and then tossed everything into the pot and cooked it for 2-1/2 hours. I then thickened the gravy by adding 2 tablespoons of cornstarch mixed with enough water to mix it into a paste. I then stirred it into the stew and cooked it for a little while longer.

I also added a can of mushrooms. You could add any other vegetables that you like.

Hi, Maria! The stew sounds delicious. As you know, I never cook (just microwave!), but this recipe has me wanting to try it! Maybe I will....

You said it makes six servings. Two questions:
- About how much is each serving?
- Can I freeze it?

Thanks, Maria. emoticon
